“Mystical country, like an eerie yellowing photograph” – David Bowie

“A small but grand statement, recorded in a week, but achieving country-soul greatness”
– UNCUT * * * * stars

“MC Taylor writes folk music that is at once firmly steeped in tradition and immediately accessible.” – NPR Music

“Fans of Will Oldham and Bill Callahan will find much to admire in the work of MC Taylor, a revivalist who also lectures in folklore.” – Guardian UK

HISS GOLDEN MESSENGER is Durham, North Carolina-based songwriter M.C. Taylor, in partnership with multi-instrumentalist and recordist Scott Hirsch, who lives in Brooklyn, New York. The pair have been playing music together for nearly two decades. Taylor and Hirsch are clear that they draw inspiration from a variety of sources, including the blue-collar mysticism of Ronnie Lane and Richard & Linda Thompson; the high haunted atmospheres of John Martyn and Talk Talk; and American vernacular music writ large (from Archie Brownlee to the Staple Singers; Charlie Poole to Merle Haggard).

William Tyler is a Nashville guitarist and composer. He spent years woodshedding and touring with Nashville groups like Lambchop and Silver Jews before breaking away to focus on his own version of instrumental guitar music. 2010’s Behold the Spirit, William Tyler’s first album under his own name, was celebrated by Pitchfork as “the most vital, energized album by an American solo guitarist in a decade or more” and established him as a critical favorite, the picker who, according to his friend and tour mate M.C. Taylor from Hiss Golden Messenger, “connects the dots between Sandy Bull, Richard Thompson, Bruce Langhorne, and Reggie Young.”

CHER VON, GARDENER, DIVINE CIRCLES, and SHUTARO NOGUCHI at MODERN CULT RECORDS, Saturday, March 7th

DIVINE CIRCLES

SHUTARO NOGUCHI

CHER VON, aka Chervon Koeune, is an experimental vocalist, performer, and composer residing in Louisville, Kentucky. CHER VON is known for her unique vocal style, which blends a playful use of wordless vocalizing with a sometimes-throaty, sometimes-graceful delivery of ethereal melodies. Working primarily with a vocal processor, a large bass drum, and miscellaneous found-sound objects, her exploration has shifted to minimalist music concepts.

Dash Lewis uses a modular synthesizer, effects pedals, and his own voice to create intricately layered, rhythmically complex slabs of trance-inducing psychedelia deeply influenced by Harmonia, Lichens, and Ariel Kalma. A GARDENER set ranges from 25-30 minutes and consists of a single composition encouraging deep listening.

DIVINE CIRCLES is the solo venture of violinist and composer Meg Mulhearn, also a member of the groups U.S. Christmas, Judas Horse and Lunar Creature.

SHUTARO NOGUCHI is from Japan and in 2010 he moved to Louisville, Kentucky after finishing his college degree and internship at FAME studio in Muscle Shoals, Alabama. He quickly found musical outlets as a collaborator with K Tranza and Another 7 Astronauts. From 2013 he started recording his own songs, and has released several recordings. His style of music varies but generally is melody-oriented, minimal acoustic guitar singer-songwriting sung in Japanese with a flavor of traditional-folk, backed by ensembles of synth and electric guitar. He is influenced by music from America and around the world, and Pajo.

PILE. The indisputable heroes of Boston’s burgeoning indie rock scene hardly need an introduction. The band’s name speaks volumes to most, and to the rest… it soon will. Earning the reputation of “your favorite band’s favorite band,” the quartet (Rick Maguire, Kris Kuss, Matt Connery, and Matt Becker) have been setting the DIY indie punk scene ablaze since 2009, developing a unanimously praised back catalog in the process and a legion of diehard fans throughout the entire country and abroad. The band have toured heavily over the years, playing all ages venues and basements in the spirit of DIY culture with peers Speedy Ortiz, Big Ups, LVL UP, Two Inch Astronaut, Krill, etc. as well as support shows with bands like Obits, Ex Hex, and Metz. Their new album, You’re Better Than This, comes out March 3 on Exploding in Sound.

The Wrists are a band from Louisville, which exploded on the scene with their first release, a cassette on AuralgamiSOUNDS in January. Consisting of Colin Kellogg, Jason Sparks, McKinley Moore, and Matt Filip, The Wrists are the most exciting new band around!

WAXEATER are “diggin’ through the ditches, burning through the witches, eatin’ pizza, taco-ing our riffs, having one dude named rob, riding in vanne frank, drinknig bourbon, gettin’ electrocuted, lovin’ america, havin’ a baby, poking smot, and slamming in the back of our dragula.”

Somewhere between punk and blues – a porch and an alley – lies Radiator King, the performing/recording name of Boston native and Brooklyn-based Adam Silvestri. Established in 2011, Radiator King’s music shows influences from both Dylan and Strummer with a sound described by Boston blog Allston Pudding as something akin to what “Tom Waits locked in a room for a month with nothing but a copy of Springsteen’s Nebraska” might produce. Whether alone with a guitar or backed by a band, Radiator King embodies the raw energy of punk, the grit and intricacy of Delta Blues, and the lyrical potency of folk in “songs that are the sonic equivalent to an old whiskey bar at the end of a dirt road.”

WILL OWEN GAGE performs groovy, rootsy, blues rock, funk, soul, R&B, bluegrass country music! He has performed all over the country and has opened for such greats as Stephen Stills, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Leon Russell, Peter Frampton, Dick Dale, Kenny Wayne Sheppard, Three Dog Night, Pinetop Perkins, Delbert McClinton, and many more! Members of Tim Krekel’s band will be joining him for this very special homecoming!

The members of GOODBYE JUNE have spent much of the past decade honing their skill as songwriters along with their proficiency as vocalists and musicians. The sum of their collective efforts makes for a greater musical experience. They typically write together and draw off of each other’s ideas. Being strong songwriters individually, and even stronger as a unit, there is never any shortage of material to build songs around. They have no set method to the songwriting process; the only constant is that everyone gets involved at some point. The fact is, the cousins of GOODBYE JUNE are constantly working on their music and perfecting their artistry, because they know that’s what it takes to make music that matters. Their debut album Nor The Wild Music Flow was released in 2013 on Cotton Valley Records.

THE SAL SHOW is a musical extravaganza consisting of several versions of thee one and only, Sal Cassato, by use of his two favorite performance mediums; visual projection interaction and rock ‘n roll [technically that’s three, Sal! -ed.]. You may know this inspiring man from performances with his other rock outfits, State Champion and Animal City. He’s playing with himself, but thinking of us.

NEW BRAVADO returns to us from atop a golden star making golden showers of golden acid on our brown, dirty heads. Blueing and blacking, this band has appreciated further time travels, backpassing Sabbath and instead bounding into the heavy psych and power fuzz of the 60s, whence came Eden’s Children, Banshee, Lincoln Street Exit.” –American Gloam

jovontaes

JOVANTAES are Lexington, Kentucky. They emerge from (and possibly define) my town’s peculiar skate/Kraut/nihil/garage axis, evoking the smell of stale Miller High Life and burning couches: stumbling match-grip surf rolls, howling chorused-out guitar, droning Adderall haze, and a singer who makes Will Shatter sound like Scott Walker. Imagine Moolah playing at a beach party on the edge of the Kentucky River, big gray globs of unidentifiable garbage drifting silently past and the dense wet air becomes gridlocked with mosquitoes” – Trevor Tremaine, Hair Police, Attempt.

THE SCREAMING HAND is a Louisville punk rock four-piece band consisting of Jason Gainous, RJ McCoskey, Bryan Burns, and Andy Collins. They write, “We all played instruments and skated together, so we figured we should start a band. That’s what we did. In a basement. Like children.” Recommended for fans of Drive Like Jehu, Witch, Fugazi, Black Flag, Rodan, Slint, Maximillian Colby, Minor Threat. And SKATEBOARDING!

1200 is a classically trained musician and experimental hip hop artist from Louisville, KY. Prior to obtaining his Bachelor of Music Education at the University of Louisville, he had the chance to perform at the Meyerson Symphony Center in Dallas, TX and the Jungfrau Music Festival in Interlaken, Switzerland. Though 1200‘s music can be considered hip hop, it is also heavily influenced by neo-classicism and fusion. 1200’s unique blend of talent, experience, and poly-stylism also appears in local musical ensembles that include the hip hop band Citizens United and fusion group Monolith. His most recent creative endeavor is the 1200 tour, a mixed ensemble that features DJ Deuce, keyboardist and guitarist Nick B, soprano vocalist Jazmyn Aria, and baritone vocalist Tyler Dippold. In addition, the group’s structure is also fluid for live shows. In their performance at Headliners Music Hall in 1200‘s hometown, the typical five-piece ensemble was joined onstage by a twelve-piece chamber chorus and string quintet.

WUSSY are a four-piece rock band from Cincinnati, Ohio fronted by ex-Ass Ponys frontman Chuck Cleaver and Lisa Walker. The two began performing together in 2001 as a result of Cleaver’s stage fright when asked to perform a brief run of solo shows. The duo’s first show was largely unplanned and still went without incident.. so they agreed to continue and expand. Mark Messerly joined in 2002 as bassist and utility man, and Dawn Burman joined on drums shortly thereafter. The four-piece released three full-length albums and one EP on their native Cincinnati’s Shake It label. Their work has met with critical praise from Rolling Stone and SPIN, both of which gave the band’s second and third albums four stars each, in addition to favorable reviews from Village Voice, NPR, Washington Post, Uncut, and many other press outlets. The “Dean of American Critics” Robert Christgau placed the band’s first two albums (Funeral Dress and Left for Dead) on his Best of the Decade list, and their third, self-titled album ranked tenth in his best of 2009 Dean’s List. Burman left the band in early 2009 and was replaced by veteran Cincinnati drummer Joe Klug.

ABOUT IASPM-US:

IASPM-US represents the United States branch of the International Association for the Study of Popular Music. IASPM-US has been an important part of the popular music landscape since the early 1980s and serves as a forum for a range of scholarly and other approaches to popular music. The past several decades have witnessed a period of dramatic and exciting growth in the field of popular music studies. The centrality of popular music to notions of personal and collective identity, geographic identity, political affiliation, technological change and adaptation, the economic and legal parameters of “intellectual property,” and the sociology of consumer-based fan cultures, makes it likely that popular music studies will only continue to grow in importance and intellectual value.

The US branch of IASPM holds true to the goals of our parent organization in the belief that popular music has much to teach us about this world. We place an emphasis on the writings and other activities of US-based scholars, journalists, and musicians–focusing not only on American music but also on musics from across the globe, and “Music 2.0″ made and consumed in virtual soundscapes.

For a professional organization, we are unique for our inter-disciplinary scope–spanning fields such as musicology, sociology, cultural anthropology, literary studies, cultural studies, American studies, and so on. The democratic, inclusive outlook of IASPM-US extends not only across different academic disciplines but also to the inter-professional level. In other words, we seek the contributions and expertise of popular music critics, journalists, industry workers, and cultural administrators in addition to university academics. Click our “How to Join” page for information on becoming an IASPM-US member.

The IASPM-US 2015 Annual Conference will take place at the University of Louisville, February 19-22, 2015.

Shacked up over a series of living-room recording sessions throughout the following years, longtime like-minds of GIVING UP, Jenny Rose, Sean Roth, and Mikie Poland stuck their heads down deep in a three-box inheritance of Grandma’s country western records, held hands, and inhaled. Suddenly, Ernest Tubb and Hank Snow shook hands with the Ben Weasel within. With little more than a few guitars, a small reed organ, a harmonica, a boom-box tape recorder, the trio wrote and recorded a string of arguably listenable demo tapes which would soon lead the way to a number of full-length records and split tapes.  With all that said and done, the breeze still blows. GIVING UP is still as charmingly raw as it was in its challengingly lo-fi stages of inception. The three friends are still friends, driving their Chevy to the levy and puking their proverbial guts out.

The sagas explaining the origins of LIFE PARTNER vary, however the epic chiseled on a monolith unearthed behind Jefferson Mall remains pivotal amongst scholarship. According to the stone, the founding members of LIFE PARTNER crossed paths just outside of the great foyer of Jefferson Mall between Bacon’s and Man Alive. A young Patrick Hume had been in between jobs since the late 90’s and was filling in as Zangief the drummer in Street Fighter II: The Band, for a string of promotional shows at GameStop. Aaron Osbourne had been forced into a life of deception by a mounting ketamine addiction; disguised in corpse paint, he had been successfully billing himself as “Brian Dennehy: Unplugged” outside of Orange Julius. During a cover of “Life in the Fastlane” an enthusiastic fan of Dennehy’s character “Walter” in Cocoon exposed him to security. Security dropped Osbourne on the entry steps where Patrick had been informed that Blanka would be replacing him for the conclusion of the tour.
It is at this juncture where the inscriptions on the monolith become indecipherable. While the bulk of mainstream cryptographers believe the two bought a cube of Keystone and crashed at Aaron’s mom’s house, some rogue linguists vehemently argue that Per Yngve Ohlin and Oystein Aarseth descended on a bolt of lightning and taught them the ways of the dark lord.

MIND OVER MIRRORS, the evolving project of Jaime Fennelly and more recently, Haley Fohr of Circuit des Yeux, deploys modest acoustic constituent materials — an Indian pedal harmonium and the human voice — to produce roiling, meditative music that both simulates the swells and troughs of synthesized electronics and conjures the ceaseless rhythms of tidal surges. While we can point out referential sonic compass points — G.I. Gurdjieff’s harmonium improvisations; certain particularly harmonically viscous recordings of Sacred Harp singers; Edward Artemiev’s soundtracks to Andrei Tarkovsky  films — in its prayerful patience, its simultaneously formal and folk aspects, and its unabashed (if intermittently anxious) beauty, it doesn’t sound much like anything else being made today. There is an easy, and unusual, confluence of praise and play at work in Jaime’s music that catalyzes heady reverie. The new MIND OVER MIRRORS album, The Voice Calling, will be released on January 27th on Immune Recordings.

DANIEL BACHMAN is a musician born and raised in Fredericksburg, Virginia. He has been playing what he describes as “psychedelic appalachia” since he was a teenager, releasing small run editions of tapes, CDs and LPs for the past few years, with a sound that evolved from drones and banjos to a now guitar centered focus. Touring off and on since the age of 17, BACHMAN has managed to cover thorough ground across the US, sharing stages with like minded folk such as fellow Fredericksburg native Jack Rose, for whom he fashioned the artwork for the posthumous release of Luck In The Valley. His new album will be released on Three Lobed Recordings this spring.

KEENAN & CHRIS is the debut of the duo of Louisville natives Keenan Lawler and Chris Bush. Keenan Lawler is a versatile guitarist who has collaborated or performed with a wide range of forward-thinking musicians and mavericks including Rhys Chatham, John Butcher, Eliott Sharp, Charalambides, Ignaz Schick/Perlonex, Kaffe Matthews, Burning Star Core, Jason Kahn, Ut Gret, Kevin Drumm, Helena Espvall, Ian Nagoski, Alan Licht, Taksuya Nakatani, Bhob Rainey, Eric Carbonara and Joseph Suchy. Chris Bush currently plays electronics in Flanger Magazine, and has also been a member of Caboladies, as well as released music in a solo project under the name Flower Man.
