Glenn Jones by Jesse Sheppard - GlennGarden 3

GLENN JONES is a unique voice working in the decades-long tradition of American Primitivism. What sets him apart from the many devotees to this style is the combination of expressive playing and technical skill, most significantly his inventive use of alternate tunings and partial capos. As anyone knows who has seen him perform, Glenn is a remarkable storyteller, and his songs reflect that talent. The songs on Glenn’s latest, My Garden State, are evocative and redolent, and serve as a testament to Glenn’s talent for conveying a wide array of emotions, many times in one song, without saying a word. My Garden State was written in the New Jersey home where Glenn’s family moved in 1966, while he was caring for his mother who suffers from Alzheimer’s. My Garden State was recorded by Laura Baird in Allentown, NJ. Laura joins Glenn on the first proper song, “Across the Tappan Zee” on banjo, interweaving her plaintive melodies with Glenn’s gentle picking. Laura’s sister Meg, who was a founding member of Espers and plays with Laura as The Baird Sisters, also joins in on the final minutes of “Going Back to East Montgomery,” an eight minute long composition that showcases Glenn’s ability to craft a long form piece that is at once expansive and immediate. The songs on My Garden State could have been written by no one except Glenn Jones, brimming joy, sorrow, and the complex in-between that makes life worth living.

NATHAN SALSBURG is an archivist, producer, guitarist, and writer based in Louisville, Kentucky. Since 2000 he has worked for the Alan Lomax Archive, for which he currently serves in the capacity of Curator, compiling and producing album releases of the renowned folklorist’s recordings, and managing the Archive’s online audio, photo, and video catalogs, and its popular YouTube channel. Salsburg has also produced archival releases for the Grammy-winning Tompkins Square label, and he curates the Twos & Fews imprint of Chicago’s Drag City record company. As an acoustic guitarist, he has released two critically acclaimed albums — a duet with Chicago’s James Elkington, entitled Avos (Tompkins Square, 2011) and a solo record called Affirmed (No Quarter, 2011) — and has appeared on WNYC Radio’s “Soundcheck” program and in NPR’s “Tiny Desk Concert” series. No Quarter will release his second solo album, Hard For to Win and Can’t Be Won, in Autumn 2013. He maintains an index of online vernacular music resources and writing on traditional and folk music at his blog: roothogordie.wordpress.com

NATHAN BOWLES is a musician and teacher living in the mountains of southwestern Virginia.  He and his bandmates in the Black Twig Pickers steep themselves in local traditions of Appalachian folk music and dance. In December of 2011 he holed up for a couple of days at Black Dirt Studios to record and mix his first solo banjo record, all performed on a handmade 5-string banjo built by his friend Greg Galbraith at Buckeye Banjos.  Over about 7 hours and a bottle of Elmer T. Lee, he laid down the material for A Bottle, A Buckeye, which was released on LP in 2012 by Soft Abuse.

There isn’t going to be any shortage of words on the new MERCHANDISE full length LP Totale Nite… Tampa, Florida is a different sort of place to be from then the major cultural cities of influence… Sometimes the more isolated locations produce more uniqueness in the absence of stimulation or bigger opportunity. With MERCHANDISE, you can’t just look at the surface because there is so much more in the collective spirit of the surrounding art and music, solo projects, additional bands, the music that came before in its richness and depth. Totale Nite is the distillation of experience, working hard, thinking deep while letting the spirit move forward unhindered. This record captures so much beyond any kind of obvious influence focusing the self-produced and recorded atmosphere into an even more distinct MERCHANDISE sound, dreamy dense post-punk drifter ballads that are as textured and dynamic as they are laden with pop sensibility.

MILK MUSIC are a band of American artists who make cosmic electric soul rock on the subject of life and the human condition. Their impeccable songwriting and style can be compared to artists such as the Velvet Underground, Gun Club, Neil Young & Crazy Horse, and the Meat Puppets. Their latest LP entitled Cruise Your Illusion is out now on compact disc and digitally through Fat Possum Records. The vinyl was self-released by the band.

destruction

Hailing from Tempe, Arizona, DESTRUCTION UNIT deal in their own sort of desert rock: ripping riffage, pounding drums, ominous atmosphere, damaged vocals. Spin magazine calls them “The best American band to hit the stage since The Stooges, The Velvets and The MC5.”

PETE FOSCO (Covington, KY; on Greenup Industries)

and

CHARLIE RIVERA (Louisville, KY)

Tuesday, April 16th
at NACHBAR
969 Charles Street (at the corner of Charles and Krieger)

For the past decade PETE FOSCO has been exploring and celebrating the sonic potential of amplified electric guitars and the imaginary worlds they create. He graduated from the College-Conservatory of Music at the University of Cincinnati in 2004 with a BFA in electronic media production. Since then his solo and collaborative work has been released by labels such as Digitalis Recordings, Reverb Worship, Holy Cheever Church, Gift Tapes, Dead Pilot, Calypso Hum, and the Greenup Industries imprint that he runs from home with his wife Heather. He has toured throughout the Midwest and Northeast United States and in Iceland. He has shared bills with many of his long-time inspirations and heroes including Charalambides, MV+EE, Six Organs of Admittance, Baby Dee, C. Spencer Yeh, Byron Westbrook, Barn Owl, Circuit des Yeux, Caboladies, Metal Rouge, and many others. He also plays in a duo with Jon Lorenz called Early Tunnels and a duo with Brad Rose called Concessionaires. In 2008 and 2009 Fosco was nominated for a Cincinnati Entertainment Award by Citybeat magazine for best experimental/electronic act. His compositions are usually at least partially if not mostly improvised, blending extended and traditional guitar techniques and drawing equal inspiration from classic 90s psychedelia like Flying Saucer Attack and Spiritualized, film soundtracks, and many varieties of free-form and improvised and sacred musics. FOSCO is a native of Cincinnati, OH and currently resides in Covington, KY.

CHARLIE RIVERA is a guitarist from Louisville, Kentucky currently known for “continually redefining what living in the moment can truly entail….Charles’ style of no-holds-barred slobber-knocker music is said to have similar effects to eating human meat in the Canadian wilderness, thus earning him his nickname of ‘The Jazz Wendigo.’”

HELADO NEGRO and SHEDDING at ZANZABAR, Sunday, March 10th

Astro Black Records and The Other Side of Life present:

HELADO NEGRO (Savannah, GA; on Asthmatic Kitty)

with

SHEDDING (Louisville, KY)

Sunday, March 10th
at ZANZABAR
2100 S. Preston
9 PM doors, 21-and-over
$6 advance tickets available online here: http://zanzabarlouisville.ticketfly.com/event/233583-helado-negro-louisville/; $8 day-of-show

The son of Ecuadorean immigrants, HELADO NEGRO was born in South Florida in 1980. His childhood was suffused with tropical heat, humidity, hurricanes, all refracted with the rich sounds and colors of the various Latin American cultures of southern Florida. Pounding bass beats from passing cars, boom boxes bouncing down the block, and late-night parties called “peñas” provided a foundation for HELADO NEGRO’s interest in sound and lifelong quest to discover the unlimited variety of objects used to produce music. HELADO NEGRO has worked with Bear in Heaven mixing their Pitchfork’s Best New Music album Beast Rest Forth Mouth.  He also produced Prefuse 73‘s 2010 album Everything She Touched Turned Ampexian. His new album, Invisible Life, will be released on March 5th, 2013 by Asthmatic Kitty.  Tones whittled out of these places, memories, time and all its impressions, Invisible Life is HELADO NEGRO‘s third full-length album. Singing in English for the first time, as well as Spanish, HELADO NEGRO is assisted by collaborators including Bear in Heaven’s Jon Philpot, Mouse on Mars’ Jan St. Werner, Devendra Barnhart, Matt Crum and Eduardo Alonso. In the way of artists like Caetano Veloso, The Sea and Cake, and even Sade, HELADO NEGRO floats beyond his own identity into that democratic forest of shape and color.

Watch the video for HELADO NEGRO‘s “Dance Ghost” from Asthmatic Kitty on Vimeo.

SHEDDING has been a solo vehicle for Connor Bell since 2001, and has released several items over those years available at Ocio and Hometapes. SHEDDING‘s music is meditative and still, eerie and unsettling — yet with a spectacular sense of melody.

BUCK GOOTER, HURRICANES OF LOVE and THE RITCHIE WHITE ORCHESTRA at LISA’S OAK STREET LOUNGE, Wednesday, February 20th

Cropped Out and the Other Side of Life present:

BUCK GOOTER (Harrisonburg, VA; on X Mist Records)
HURRICANES OF LOVE (Everywhere)
THE RITCHIE WHITE ORCHESTRA (Louisville, KY; NYC, NY; Los Angeles, CA)

Wednesday, February 20th
at LISA’S OAK STREET LOUNGE
1004 E. Oak Street
9 PM, 21-and-over, $5

Listening to BUCK GOOTER you hear contradictions of caterwauling, cacophonous railing; screaming, snarling and gnashing hurled over drony beats and jarring guitar lines.  One can’t help thinking to oneself if this is a white-trash parody of trailer park life, a punk-rock free-style or some sort of crypto-intellectualizing with a ciphered message. Whatever the intention, one gets a kind of involuntary headbanging, arm-shaking, thrashing reaction to it from the second their huge sound starts. Their new album, Witch Molecules, was released last month on Germany’s X Mist Records, and was recorded by Don Zientara at Inner Ear in Arlington, Virginia.

Frank Copenhaver, the central presence in the rotating cast of musicians and friends that makes up the psychedelic folk group HURRICANES OF LOVE, has chosen an appropriate name for his music project. Copenhaver himself is a force of nature, an ebullient enthusiast of goodwill and good vibes—in a recent interview, he described two different places as “paradise on earth.” And he has no fixed location, landing, he says, “where the wind would take me.” — from Metropulse.

THE RITCHIE WHITE ORCHESTRA is one of life’s sonic rewards. An exploration in aural dissonant lollipops perfect for the brain. Comprised of anyone and everybody the Orchestra has featured some distinguished collaborators in the past – Lydia Lunch, Stephin Merritt, Roddy Bottum, Matt Fishbeck and more. As Jacqueline Susaan writes, “You have to climb to the top of Mount Everest to reach the Valley of the Dolls.”

MATMOS, HORSE LORDS, and PARLOUR at ZANZABAR, Saturday, March 2nd

matmostim
(Poster design by Tim Furnish.)

Cropped Out and the Other Side of Life present:

MATMOS (Baltimore, Maryland; Thrill Jockey Records)

with special guests

HORSE LORDS (Baltimore, Maryland)
PARLOUR (Louisville, Kentucky; Temporary Residence)

Saturday, March 2nd
at ZANZABAR
2100 S. Preston
8 PM doors, 21-and-over
$8 advance tickets available online here: http://zanzabarlouisville.ticketfly.com/event/219061-matmos-louisville;$10 day-of-show

MATMOS is M.C. Schmidt and Drew Daniel, aided and abetted by many others. Currently based in Baltimore, the duo formed in San Francisco in the mid 1990s, and self-released their debut album in 1997. Marrying the conceptual tactics and noisy textures of object-based musique concrete to a rhythmic matrix rooted in electronic pop music, the two quickly became known for their highly unusual sound sources: amplified crayfish nerve tissue, the pages of bibles turning, water hitting copper plates, liposuction surgery, cameras and VCRs, chin implant surgery, contact microphones on human hair, rat cages, tanks of helium, a cow uterus, human skulls, snails, cigarettes, cards shuffling, laser eye surgery, whoopee cushions, balloons, latex fetish clothing, rhinestones, Polish trains, insects, life support systems, inflatable blankets, rock salt, solid gold coins, the sound of a frozen stream thawing in the sun, a five gallon bucket of oatmeal. These raw materials are manipulated into surprisingly accessible forms, and often supplemented by traditional musical instruments played by the group’s large circle of friends and collaborators. The result is a model of electronic composition as a relational network that connects sources and outcomes together; information about the process of creation activates the listening experience, providing the listener with entry points into sometimes densely allusive, baroque recordings. Since their debut, MATMOS have released over eight albums, and in 2001 they were asked to collaborate with the Icelandic singer Bjork on her Vespertine album, and subsequently embarked on two world tours as part of her band. In addition to musical collaborations with Antony, So Percussion, David Tibet, the Rachel’s, Lesser, Wobbly, Zeena Parkins, and the Princeton Laptop Orchestra, MATMOS have also collaborated with a wide range of artists across disciplines, from the visual artist Daria Martin to the playwright Young Jean Lee to Berlin-based choreographer Ayman Harper. Their newest album, The Marriage of True Minds, will be released on February 19th, 2013 by Thrill Jockey Records.

HORSE LORDS is a band from Baltimore, Maryland. According to baltimorefishbowl.com, they “offer that rare opportunity: witnessing a ragged, seething kind of greatness from a band not yet heralded by any major taste-making media outlets. Which is to say you can just unselfconsciously enjoy them. Bands like this remind you that musical greatness is not manufactured by record labels and hype machines; they’re snatched up by those entities somewhere further down the line.” HORSE LORDS are supporting and performing with MATMOS on the latter’s entire US tour.

PARLOUR originally began as a solo project from Tim Furnish following the mid-90s dissolution of CRAIN – the seminal Louisville rock group he co-founded in the late ’80s. Currently playing with new drummer (Greg Morris) and synth player (Brian Sweeney), Furnish’s PARLOUR evokes “A unique combination of interweaving guitar shards… driven by a dark, relentless rhythm section.” Their most recent album, Simulacrenfield (released on Temporary Residence), was one of our favorites of 2010.

UPDATE, 2/26/2013: Here’s a couple of things to note about this show:

1. Doors to this event will open at 8 PM, and music will start at 9 PM sharp! That means Parlour will play first, right at 9 PM. Due to time constraints, the show will have to start at 9 PM. So get there early! Horse Lords will play at approximately 9:45 PM, and Matmos will be onstage by 10:45 PM, ending at midnight (if not a little before).
2. There’s a good chance this show may sell out, so if you haven’t bought advance tickets already, you probably should. You can buy them here: http://zanzabarlouisville.ticketfly.com/event/219061-matmos-louisville/
3. There will be a separate DJ event afterwards, starting at midnight. Generally, Zanzabar gets crowded early on Friday and Saturday nights so, again, buy advance tickets and show up early to ensure you don’t miss anything!
4. The show is general admission, with very limited first-come, first-serve seating around the bar and the booths ONLY, with no reservations. So if you need a seat, please be sure to be there at 8 PM.

Thanks and we hope to see you Saturday!

DANIEL HIGGS and TROTTER/RILES at QUILL’S, Thursday, November 29th

Astro Black Records, Cropped Out and The Other Side of Life are proud to present:

DANIEL HIGGS (Baltimore, Maryland)

with special guests

TROTTER/RILES (Louisville, Kentucky)

Thursday, November 29th
at QUILL’S
930 Baxter Avenue
10 PM, $6, ALL AGES!

DANIEL HIGGS is a musician and artist from Baltimore, Maryland on whose behalf superlatives are destined to fail. It’s not that his artistic output – spanning three decades, numerous albums, books of poetry and collections of drawings – simply eludes classification, it defies it. Often we hear that a true work of art is meant to speak for itself, and with the work of DANIEL HIGGS the maxim rings truer than ever. His art is of the cosmos, we on Earth merely lucky that it happens to be confined to our atmosphere, in our lifetime. HIGGS is known primarily for his work as the sole lyricist and frontman of the band LUNGFISH, a four-piece dedicated to charting, in this listener’s estimation, nothing short of the evolution of all species, known and unknown. That the band has undertaken this pursuit in the guise of a humble rock outfit, in the absence of any public relations fanfare, metanarrative, or manifesto has been enough to endear them to tens of thousands. They are enshrined as one of America’s last true folk bands, and HIGGS anointed as a patron saint to artistic purity.

TROTTER/RILES is the duo of Tyler Trotter and Zak Riles. Both have been active within the Louisville music scene, and in the greater world, as musicians, promoters, sound engineers, and enthusiasts. Riles is best known as a member of the Temporary Residence Ltd. band GRAILS, while Trotter has performed with the PHANTOM FAMILY HALO, and was the longtime sound man for the CALIFORNIA GUITAR TRIO. This show marks their second-ever Louisville show, and third show total, coming after their debut with Maserati at Zanzabar and with OM and Daniel Higgs in Bloomington, Indiana.
