BILL ORCUTT – former guitarist of noise-rockers Harry Pussy – went under the radar for several years after his first solo LP in ’97. However, he resurfaced promptly in 2009 with the LP A New Way To Pay Old Debts, consisting of eight acoustic songs driven by visceral, spastic clatter, backed by either sung, grunted or chanted vocals. It’s safe to say no one handles an acoustic guitar like Bill Orcutt, and we are all better for it. That fine line between ‘genius’ and ‘crazy’ is his to tread.

TIM BARNES is an internationally-known percussionist, electronic musician, and recording producer/engineer who has played and recorded with Sonic Youth, Wilco, Body/Head, Jim O’Rourke, Silver Jews, Neil Michael Hagerty and the Howling Hex, The Tower Recordings, The For Carnation, and MV+EE, as well as being featured in countless multiple other settings, from jazz-influenced free-improvisation to full-on rock n’ roll. He is the Artistic Director of DREAMLAND, and also runs the newly-revived Quakebasket record label (best known for its mid-1990s archival releases of solo work by Angus MacLise, poet and original drummer for the Velvet Underground). A California native, Tim moved to Louisville, Kentucky in 2007 from his longtime musical base, New York City.

NEW BUMS‘ debut album, Voices in a Rented Room, is sweet and sensitive, hard and nasty, everything you need from your new record. NEW BUMS play their songs on mostly acoustic guitars, making it easy to hear what they’re saying – but then they swathe their voices in reverb, making it a little harder again. What’s life if you don’t have to try, right? The other reason for the reverb is that the Bums just LURVE that addle-headed state of mind where you know your life is wrong but you don’t do much about it – and so the songs are alternatively, moments of sodden introspection that turn to sharply focused acting-out fantasies, the types of which we all need to get ourselves by. NEW BUMS rhymes with two Bums, which is prolly closer to the truth – the band’s made up of Ben Chasny and Donovan Quinn, on guitars and singing. For the record, they employed a rhythm section, but what really makes the air move is the relationship between those guitars and voices, hanging in the thick and reverberant air. For those of us who know Ben from Six Organs of Admittance and Donovan from Skygreen Leopards, NEW BUMS is exciting for bringing them together in ways they couldn’t possibly have realized in their parent bands. This is new territory for both Bums, but also carries the whiff of their former selves. Voices in a Rented Room is out today, so make sure you haunt your local record flop, they ought to have this if they have any self-respect left. Stick out your thumb, and pull in a bum – starting now and through the spring and the rest of time, etc. This show is their Louisville debut.

JR Robinson has been writing and recording music as WREKMEISTER HARMONIES in various incarnations since 2006. His most recent album, You’ve Always Meant So Much To Me, was written to accompany a film Robinson shot in decimated Detroit locations, the desert of Joshua Tree and decaying forests of Tasmania. In 2012 he brought together some of the most revered musicians in the black metal and experimental music worlds (Jef Whitehead of Leviathan, Sanford Parker and Andrew Markuszewski of Nachmystium, Jamie Fennelly aka Mind Over Mirrors, Mark Solotroff of Anatomy of Habit, Bruce Lamont of Yakuza, and more) to perform the 38 minute composition at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago to much acclaim and a sold out theater. The collaborators for the live performance joined Robinson at Steve Albini’s Electrical Audio later that year to record the composition in full. This show is his Louisville debut.

RYLEY WALKER is a 24 year-old singer/songwriter and guitarist from Chicago, Illinois. Having kicked around Chicago’s experimental free/noise music scene for several years, Ryley recently turned to a folk-rock sound inspired by some of his heroes, among them Tim Hardin, Tim Buckley, and Bert Jansch. The result is a poised and accomplished debut album, recorded in Chicago by Cooper Crain (guitarist/keyboardist in Cave). The album will be released by Tompkins Square in April 2014.

“With the charming swagger of jazz-folk troubadour Tim Buckley and the resonant, full picking style of Bert Jansch, “The West Wind” comes from Walker’s first widely available release, a three-song 12”. With acoustic guitar in hand and a voice like browned butter, Walker swings and sways in a lush string-and-piano arrangement right out of Buckley’sStarsailor; it slowly picks up to a swirling gallop without bucking the rhythm.” – NPR Music

SCREAMING FEMALES is a punk rock band from New Brunswick, New Jersey. They have released five full length albums. The band features Marissa Paternoster on guitar and vocals, Jarrett Dougherty on drums, and King Mike on bass. SCREAMING FEMALES got their start in New Brunswick’s basement show scene. The band has gone on to achieve success with a wider exposure, having been featured on NPR, and have played with bands such as Garbage, Throwing Muses, Dinosaur Jr., The Dead Weather, Arctic Monkeys, Ted Leo & The Pharmacists, JEFF the Brotherhood, and many more. They will release a new live album this spring, and will tour the US with the Julie Ruin.

JULIE OF THE WOLVES is comprised of vocalist/guitarist Carrie Neumayer (Second Story Man, Early Age), Stephanie Gary (Venus Trap, The Frequent Sea), Salena Filichia (Madame Machine, Venus Trap) and Becca Lindsay (The Red Nails, Minnow). Those are only a partial listing of the bands these people have been in. This lineup has a lot of Louisville musical history running through it. The name of the band comes from the 1972 book by Jean Craighead George, in which the title character must face changes and dangerous challenges forced upon her from culture, the elements and humankind. “These are challenging tunes that do not shy from pushing and pulling simultaneously, a teaming between catchy melodies and a pounding aggression.” — American Gloam.

THE DEBAUCHEES are seemingly old souls with a youthful sneer. At just 20, the three members of THE DEBAUCHEES have crafted a full-length that feels vintage and modern, classic and new. Their debut, Big Machines and Peculiar Beings, evokes the minimalist yet intricate post-punk approach of Wire, Talking Heads, and Young Marble Giants with distinct vocals that evoke an emotive Nico. And like many of their punk predecessors, this thunderous trio comes from a fine lineage of artists who formed a band before learning their instruments – to prodigious results. Vocalist Sydney Chadwick says “we all learned how to play in an unconventional way so our playing styles became personal and rule-defying.” The Debauchees are Sydney Chadwick (vocals/guitar), Ashley Bowen (bass), and Cameron Lowe (drums).

The Louisville Outskirts Festival is a not-for-profit, volunteer-run weekend of musical performances, educational workshops, and community building. The festival seeks to encourage, support, inspire, and highlight the music made by women and female-identified members of Louisville’s independent music scene as well as showcase influential and inspiring musicians selected from other parts of the country and world. LOOP was formed in Croydon, London, 1986 by Robert Hampson (vocals/guitars) and partner Beki Stewart (Bex) on drums. After finding Glen Ray on bass, through an advert in Melody Maker, they began to perform live and were quickly signed to HEAD Records run by Jeff Barrett (Heavenly) who released their feedback-drenched debut 12” 16 Dreams. The band managed to hypnotize all with their discordant trance-like spell which served as an antidote to the prevailing trend in British pop at the time – they resurrected the concept of loud out there-rock for a new era, creating droning soundscapes of bleak beauty and harsh dissonance, loosely influenced by bands such as The Velvet Underground, The Stooges, The MC5, but retaining an avant-garde and experimental edge from Can, Faust, Neu!, Rhys Chatham, Glenn Branca and minimalist systems music, to name but a few. Live shows were revelatory, Loop, allowing LOUD as an constant descriptive term, they pushed PAs to the very edge of their existence, creating a sonic pummel not really experienced since. This show will be their Louisville debut!

Celebrating their 10th year as one of independent music’s most substantive bands, Louisville’s COLISEUM return from touring for their fourth full-length, the stunning Sister Faith, released by Temporary Residence Ltd. Expanding on the anthemic direction the trio veered toward on 2010′s highly acclaimed House With a Curse, Sister Faith‘s 13 songs are the most dynamic and immediately captivating of the band’s career, bristling with galvanizing melodies at the collision point between punk and noise-rock. The first album to be recorded in producer J. Robbins’ recently relocated Magpie Cage Studios, Sister Faith is also the first Coliseum recording to feature new bassist, Kayhan Vaziri, in addition to contributions from some of the groups’ closest friends and musical peers: Wata of Boris, J. Robbins (Jawbox, Burning Airlines), Jason Farrell (Swiz, Bluetip), Elizabeth Elmore (Sarge, The Reputation), Chris Colohan (Burning Love, Cursed), Sam James Velde (Night Horse, Bluebird), and Jason Loewenstein (Sebadoh, The Fiery Furnaces) all make small but memorable contributions.

THE PEOPLE’S TEMPLE was formed in 2007 by two sets of brothers: Alex Szegedy (guitar/vocals) and George Szegedy (drums) and Spencer Young (bass/vocals) and William Young (guitar/vocals). The Lansing, Michigan band met while growing up in Perry — a small town 20 minutes outside of Lansing. While still in high school the brothers became influenced by ’60s psych, folk, and shoegaze, which show in the band’s reverberated sound. The band started playing gigs in the Lansing area in 2008 and has since developed a reputation of performing wild stage shows, with ample guitar feedback. The band has 7-inch EPs on Certified PR Records, Milk-n-Herpes Records and HoZac Records. Their debut LP, “Sons of Stone” was released in Mayl 2011 on HoZac Records. Also a 7″ on Goodbye Boozy appeared in late 2011. The band is released its second album, More for the Masses, in December 2012.

CHRIS FORSYTH is a lauded guitarist and composer whose work assimilates art-rock textures with vernacular American influences. Long active in underground circles, he has released a string of acclaimed records of widescreen guitar rock under his own name including 2011’s Paranoid Cat (Family Vineyard) and 2012’s Kenzo Deluxe (Northern Spy). His most recent release, Solar Motel (Paradise of Bachelors) has been called one of 2013’s best releases by the New Yorker, Uncut, Aquarium Drunkard, Frontier Psychiatrist, Pop Matters, and others, provoking ecstatic comparisons to classic artists like Television, The Grateful Dead, Popul Vuh, Neil Young & Crazy Horse, Richard Thompson, Robert Quine, John Fahey, and Glenn Branca. In spring 2013, Forsyth formed The Solar Motel Band with longtime bassist Peter Kerlin, guitarist Paul Sukeena (Spacin’) and drummer Steven Urgo (ex-The War on Drugs), and introduced the band with a month-long June residency at Ortlieb’s in Philly that ignited a storm of blog praise when the shows were posted on Soundcloud. This is their first tour.

THE RITCHIE WHITE ORCHESTRA is one of life’s sonic rewards. An exploration in aural dissonant lollipops perfect for the brain. Comprised of anyone and everybody the Orchestra has featured some distinguished collaborators in the past – Lydia Lunch, Stephin Merritt, Roddy Bottum, Matt Fishbeck and more. As Jacqueline Susaan writes, “You have to climb to the top of Mount Everest to reach the Valley of the Dolls.” They’re set to release their debut double-7″ record on Louisville’s resurrected SELF DESTRUCT label this spring!

DREAMLAND Set to Open Next Week!

DREAMLAND, a new performing and visual arts space, is set to open at 810 East Market Street in Louisville, Kentucky with inaugural performances on Thursday, January 30^th by the Jim Marlowe/Steve Good/Jackie Royce Reed Trio (their debut) and mAAs, two local music ensembles. Formerly known as the Dreamland Film Center, creative endeavors of all kinds will now be facilitated at DREAMLAND by TIM BARNES, Founder and Artistic Director of THE NEW MEDIA PROJECT.

Tucked in an alleyway off East Market Street, right behind Decca Restaurant, DREAMLAND is a 100-person capacity black-box theater with adjoining lounge and lobby space. It has been utilized for the past few years by the Louisville Film Society for screenings, concerts, lectures, and production offices. In a previous life, the DREAMLAND space was a chapel, as part of the Wayside Christian Mission.

THE NEW MEDIA PROJECT has been an ongoing multi-disciplinary, multi-media production emphasizing adventures in new music, visual forms, and architecture. Founded by Tim Barnes, THE NEW MEDIA PROJECT aims to expose Louisville audiences to the best of what the world’s art communities has to offer.

DREAMLAND’S Artistic Director TIM BARNES is an internationally-known percussionist, electronic musician, and recording producer/engineer who has played and recorded with Sonic Youth, Wilco, Body/Head, Jim O’Rourke, Silver Jews, Neil Michael Hagerty and the Howling Hex, The Tower Recordings, The For Carnation, and MV+EE, as well as being featured in countless multiple other settings, from jazz-influenced free-improvisation to full-on rock n’ roll. Tim is no stranger to curating music events as he had a hand in guiding NYC’s acclaimed Issue Project Room in becoming a venue. A California native, Tim moved with his wife and their two children to Louisville, Kentucky in 2007 from his longtime musical base, New York City. As a relatively-new Louisvillian, BARNES is enthusiastic about reaching out to the entire community in developing DREAMLAND as a viable and vital part of our city.

Partnering with BARNES on this endeavor is JOEL HUNT as Business Manager/Publicist, a Louisville native and independent music promoter, best known for his one-man production team The Other Side of Life, as well as his music writing for LEO Weekly, Swingset magazine, and many others. Formerly a resident of New York City, HUNT has also served as a production manager for the Beggars Group of recording labels (which includes Matador Records, 4AD, XL Recordings, and others).

DREAMLAND is dedicated to presenting a vanguard of musicians, performing artists, and cinema from around the globe, as well as being a showcase for like-minded artists from right here in Louisville. Our city’s many and varied arts, music, and cultural groups are highly encouraged to consider DREAMLAND as a potential partner in performance and promotion, and we encourage all inquiries. With easy access to and from Downtown Louisville, DREAMLAND hopes to be the artistic and musical beat in the heart of Louisville’s East Market District, also known as NuLu.

Love and death: these are the only themes. So it’s been in SIMON JOYNER’s twenty years of making records—from 1992’s Umbilical Chords cassette to his most recent double LP, Ghosts. Polar Satellites is the stunning collaboration by NATHAN BOWLES (Pelt/Black Twig Pickers) and SCOTT VERRASTRO (Kohoutek), released in early July, 2013 on LP and digitally by MIE. Polar Satellites is a mesmerising collection of percussion improvisations performed in duo by Nathan and Scott deep in the winter of 2009 and 2010 with absolutely no overdubs. Building on the starkness of last years Effigy by Pelt, (recently repressed on MIE), the duo have recorded an even bleaker, more minimal and hermetically vibed record together. Unnerving and hypnotic, Polar Satellites is an intense journey into the unknown, awash with uncategorisable percussive instruments, kalimbas and banjo. Nathan and Scott first met in Washington D.C when Nathan would sit in on Kohoutek sets. They were brought together as a duo on a track recorded for Three Lobed Records’ Jack Rose tribute album and were so struck by the results that they went down to Black Dirt Studios and laid down these tracks with Jason Meagher on engineering, recording and mixing duties.

mAAs is the duo of Louisville musicians Connor Bell (also of Shedding) and Tim Barnes. Louisville resident and drummer extraordinaire, the list of Tim Barnes‘s collaborators is too long to list here, but it includes Jim O’Rourke, Silver Jews, Neil Michael Hagerty and the Howling Hex, The Tower Recordings, and countless others. Most recently, Tim Barnes played drums with the resurrected lineup of The For Carnation, as well as with MV+EE at Cropped Out in November, 2011. Connor Bell has released several items over the years under the name Shedding, available at Ocio and Hometapes, all of which is meditative and still, eerie and unsettling — yet with a spectacular sense of melody.

IRA COHEN (February 3, 1935 – April 25, 2011) was an American poet, publisher, photographer and filmmaker. Cohen lived in Morocco and in New York City in the 1960s, he was in Kathmandu in the 1970s and traveled the world in the 1980s, before returning to New York, where he spent the rest of his life.

About IRA COHEN‘s 1968 film “The Invasion of Thunderbolt Pagoda” J. Hoberman wrote the following in the Mar. 16, 2006 Village Voice: “Part ‘Dr. Strange,’ part ‘Inauguration of the Pleasure Dome,’ [‘The Invasion of Thunderbolt Pagoda’ is] so High ’60s that you emerge from its 20-minute vision perched full-lotus on a cloud of incense, chatting with a white rabbit and smoking a banana…. ‘Invasion’ is a languidly opiated costume ball in which an assortment of masked and painted bohos, some sporting outsize elf ears, loll about a candlelit, Mylar-lined set, blowing soap bubbles and nibbling majoon. …In lieu of action, Cohen uses all manner of superimposition and prismatic image-splitting; his big effect, however, is the deliquescent Mylar reflection. What saves ‘Invasion’ from preciosity is the vague menace of Angus MacLise’s improvised pan-piping, tabla-tapping, creature-yipping score. Although this masterpiece of Tibetan-Moroccan-Druidic trance music was reissued on CD several years ago, it truly blossoms in conjunction with the exotic smorgasbord served at Cohen’s psychedelicatessen.”

The soundtrack to “THE INVASION OF THUNDERBOLT PAGODA” by Angus MacLise has been remastered by Tim Barnes for reissue on his newly-resurrected Quakebasket record label.
