ATIVIN formed in Bloomington, Indiana in the winter of 1994 after Chris Carothers (guitar) and Rory Leitch (drums) met at Indiana University. Guitarist Dan Burton joined the group the following spring, cementing the band’s loud, instrumental rock sound. Steve Albini and Carl Saff recorded the band’s debut EP, Pills vs. Planes, which was released in December 1996. The spring of 1997 saw the release of the “Modern Gang Reader”/”Larkin” single, the first of several releases for Secretly Canadian Records. The band worked with Andy Bryant at King Size on German Water, its debut album for Secretly Canadian, releasing it in March 1998. A return to Albini’s Chicago studio, Electrical Audio, yielded the four-song EP Summing the Approach, which was released in the fall of 1998. Taking a break while Carothers moved out west and Burton worked in the band Early Day Miners, ATIVIN reconvened in 2001 with drummer Kevin Duneman, to record Interiors, which added sparse, minimalist vocals to their sound; it was released in early 2002 to critical acclaim. Continuing on in the same vein, ATIVIN recorded their last release Night Mute in both Bloomington and Portland, using drummers Mark Rice (John Wilkes Booze) and Joey Ficken (The Swords Project) in early 2004. After a lengthy hiatus, ATIVIN are now playing select shows when and if they feel it’s right.

ANWAR SADAT “sound totally Boston circa 1982: aggressively shouted vocals, aggressive rhythms, jaggedly distorted guitars and just enough melody above the noise to make them catchy as hell.” – New York Music Daily. ANWAR SADAT has released two albums and an EP, and is currently working on their third album.

OLD BABY, BROKEBACK, and CHRIS BROKAW at THE NEW VINTAGE, Saturday, April 11th

OLD BABY is a Louisville-based psych rock band consisting of Todd Cook (SHIPPING NEWS, KINGS DAUGHTERS AND SONS), Evan Patterson (YOUNG WIDOWS, JAYE JAYLE) Jonathan Glen Wood, Neil Argabright (SAPAT), and Drew Osborn (WORKERS).  The band’s first LP, entitled Misunderstanding Human Behavior, is available via Hawthorne Street.

Douglas McCombs’s goal for his longstanding BROKEBACK project has always been to do service to those fleeting moments in life when everything seems clear and defined and beautiful and the hair stands up on the back of your neck. These moments are hard to describe and by their nature impossible to capture, but to try it is to be inspired. They’re not always auditory, but for their musical expression, think Roy Orbison when he’s sad and lonely, or alternately when he’s feeling triumphant, a Tom Verlaine guitar solo, Stravinsky and Erik Satie, an Ennio Morricone crescendo. Or Billy Gibbons, in a lyric like “Ridin’ ‘top the floodway on a Friday night / The landscape’s a fine and natural sight.” In the fall of 2010, when McCombs convened a new version of the band, BROKEBACK hadn’t played a live show for more than two years and had not recorded any new music for eight. McCombs’s idea was not to start over, exactly, but to start fresh, approaching similar harmonic content from a different direction, taking into consideration the perspectives of the three new guys, Pete Croke (Tight Phantomz, Head of Skulls!, Reds and Blue), Chris Hansen (Pinebender, Head of Skulls!), and James Elkington (the Zincs, the Horse’s Ha). For this show, they will be joined by ace guitarist CHRIS BROKAW (Come, Codeine, Pullman, The Chris Brokaw Band, The Lemonheads).

(photo of Chris Brokaw by Sven Gielen.)

With his new double album The Periscope Twins and 6th release on Gerard Cosloy’s 12XU record label, singer/songwriter, film composer, rock’n’roller and abstract noisemaker CHRIS BROKAW steps fully into the void. Since 2002 Chris has alternated his solo albums between instrumental forays and what he calls “singing songs”, never entirely leaving behind his roots in rock and punk while exploring new avenues of traditional and nontraditional forms. 2008 saw the formation of his own label, Capitan Records, whose first release Canaris showed two sides of the acoustic guitar: ruminative finger-picked pieces, and the howling 18 minute title track, wherein his Martin nearly explodes through a wall of amplifiers. In recent years he’s explored abstract forms in duos with Stephen O’Malley (Sunn O))), David Michael Curry (the Willard Grant Conspiracy) and Alex Hacke (Einsturzende Neubauten); with The Periscope Twins he delivers two solo pieces, each 40-45 minutes long; one for electronics, one for electric guitar; each one take, no overdubs. Brilliantly mastered by Bob Weston, The Periscope Twins draws the listener into realms of both hypnosis and osmosis; drone for anyone and everyone.
Chris also continues to play in WREKMEISTER HARMONIES, THE NEW YEAR, THE MARTHA’S VINEYARD FERRIES and THE LEMONHEADS.

A Bhutanese guitarist now residing in Asheville, North Carolina, TASHI DORJI makes meticulously crafted sounds that conjure spirits, wrestle demons, and tame wild beasts. As beautiful as they are cerebral, his acoustic works are reminiscent of Derek Bailey’s free improvisations, flamenco and John Fahey’s Americana. His new album, Appa, will be released by Bathetic on March 31st: http://batheticrecords.com/release/appa/.

EXACTA CUBE is the electronic improvisational vehicle of Introvert (www.soundcloud.com/introvertmusic) and Nicholas Daniel (www.soundcloud.com/gigasturtz). Intricate textures mashed with complex and evolving rhythms, their debut cassette last year was the first release on the new, Louisville-based City State Tapes label (www.facebook.com/citystatetapes).

ANTiSEEN

ANTiSEEN started in 1983 with founding members Jeff Clayton and Joe Young. Named as a mis-spelling of the term “anti-scene,” meaning against any scene that has its own rules, code of conduct, fashion and chain of command by hip scenesters. It’s only ROCK ‘N” ROLL and we LOVE it!!! The band has done multiple full European tours and played all over the USA, with well over 50 releases world-wide (many already into numerous repressings). ANTiSEEN started the “southern punk” image that many latch onto today. The band backed up now legendary scum lord GG ALLIN on his first post-prison release “MURDER JUNKIES” and also recorded with guitarist / song writer for the original ALICE COOPER group, Michael Bruce. Live shows consist of violent bursts of musical blitzkriegs, and an unhealthy dose of Pro Wrestling influence that features barbed wire wrapped baseball bats or crowns of barbwire that cause REAL bloodshed and the occasional auto-self-destruct finale that got them labeled “Destructo Rock” early in the group’s history.

(Photo of SAVAGE MASTER by Nicholas Smith.)

SAVAGE MASTER describe themselves as “Satanic Heavy Metal Straight From The Depths of Hell!” And if you’ve seen them live, you know they’re not joking! Definitely the best of Louisville’s current Metal scene.

AMERICAN LESIONS is a new band consisting of Louisville hardcore veterans from bands as diverse and storied as Out., Great Floods, Trophy Wives, Coliseum, Hedge, and Nixon. This show will be the debut of their first set of all-original material.

freakwater

FREAKWATER was formed by Janet Bean and Catherine Irwin in 1989 and has been innovating and reinvigorating alt-country ever since. Following two records on Amoeba Records, the duo signed to Thrill Jockey in 1993 for the seminal Feels Like the Third Time, which was reissued on vinyl for Record Store Day 2012. The record opens with “My Old Drunk Friend,” perhaps the greatest song Hank Williams never wrote and features seven originals and five covers of songs by the likes of Conway Twitty, Woody Guthrie and Nick Lowe. 1995’s Old Paint showed the group’s songwriting coming into its own, and was their most critically acclaimed album to date. Freakwater is in the process of finishing a new album, recorded in Louisville at Kevin Ratterman’s La La Land studio, to be released in 2015.

Fans of the aggressive cacophony of Louisville’s Young Widows may be surprised when frontman Evan Patterson’s restrained acoustic guitar greets them at the top of …It’s Jayle Time!, the debut full-length from Patterson’s singer-songwriter alter ego JAYE JAYLE. The record follows the eponymous protagonist through a fever dream of sex, booze, loneliness, and demons out on the barren range of New Mexico. Live and in the studio, Patterson is joined by a loose assemblage of Louisville musicians that may include Jonathan Glen Wood (of Old Baby), Lowe Sutherland, Jim Marlowe (Tropical Trash/Astro Black Records), Todd Cook (Old Baby, Shipping News), and who knows who else? Eschewing a traditional LP release, …It’s Jayle Time! was released as a series of limited 7″ singles throughout 2014.

DRUNKEN PRAYER is Country “in the same way that The Silver Jews or Jon Wayne can be considered ‘country’, or Butthole Surfers can be considered ‘art rock’…Just think of it as music for literate underachievers, or the soundtrack to a Blue Velvet style back road joyride.”

Formerly the guitarist for the legendary Sun City Girls, Richard Bishop released his first solo record (Salvador Kali) in 1998 on John Fahey’s esteemed Revenant label under the moniker SIR RICHARD BISHOP. Since then he has released albums on a variety of labels: Improvika, Elektronika Demonika, and While My Guitar Violently Bleeds (Locust Music), Fingering the Devil (Southern Records UK), Polytheistic Fragments and The Freak of Araby (Drag City), Hypostasis: A Work in Three Parts (VDSQ Solo Acoustic Series), and many more. His most recent LP, The Tangier Session, is now available on Drag City.

KARK is a massive free ensemble from Louisville which  features a revolving cast of over 50 musicians including members of Sapat, Valley of Ashes, Virgin Eye Blood Brothers, Son of Earth, Taiwan Death and The Belgian Waffles. Their debut record The Hermit (HP Cycle, 2007) consists of three extended pieces that offer spaciously abstract atmospheres as well as moments of righteous cacophony. Utilizing a multitude of brass, reeds and percussion the album careens through numerous passages where intricate harmonics are created from the densely layered sounds. When the full force of the ensemble is unleashed individual elements appear and quickly recede into the squall. As the music nearly becomes unhinged, the sound disintegrates into a Godzilla-like rockist thud propelled by the rhythm section and soaring horns before drifting to a sparse conclusion.

millis-victrola

ROBERT MILLIS has been a member of the lauded underground bands Climax Golden Twins and AFCGT, a solo artist, and a frequent contributor to the Sublime Frequencies label. He has scored long and short films, created sound installations, produced and designed audio projects, and released many LPs and CDs, including the heralded Victrola Favorites book and compilation released on Dust-to-Digital in 2008. MILLIS says his work “veers haphazardly between sound art, music concrete, instrumental, improv, field recording, song and collage. I have a deep interest in folk and traditional music, so imagine Pete Seeger trying to cover Revolution 9 by the Beatles.”

OREN AMBARCHI‘s works are hesitant and tense extended songforms located in the cracks between several schools: modern electronics and processing; laminal improvisation and minimalism; hushed, pensive songwriting; the deceptive simplicity and temporal suspensions of composers such as Morton Feldman and Alvin Lucier; and the physicality of rock music, slowed down and stripped back to its bare bones, abstracted and replaced with pure signal.

From the late 90’s his experiments in guitar abstraction and extended technique have led to a more personal and unique sound-world incorporating a broader palette of instruments and sensibilities. On releases such as Grapes From The Estate and In The Pendulum’s Embrace AMBARCHI employed glass harmonica, strings, bells, piano, drums and percussion, creating fragile textures as light as air which tenuously coexist with the deep, wall-shaking bass tones derived from his guitar.

AMBARCHI has performed and recorded with a diverse array of artists such as Fennesz, Charlemagne Palestine, Sunn 0)), Thomas Brinkmann, Keiji Haino, Alvin Lucier, John Zorn, Merzbow, Jim O’Rourke, Keith Rowe, Akio Suzuki, Phill Niblock, John Tilbury, Richard Pinhas, Evan Parker, crys cole, Fire! and many more.

Since 2001 AMBARCHI has toured Europe, North America and Japan regularly and has performed at major festivals such as ATP (UK), Sonar (Spain), Mutek (Canada), CTM (Germany), INA GRM (France), Roskilde (Denmark), Etna Fest (Italy), Festival De Mexico (Mexico) and many more including a recent live collaboration with the Icelandic Symphony Orchestra at the Tectonics festival in Reykjavik. His acclaimed trio with Keiji Haino and Jim O’Rourke performs in Tokyo annually with many of their concerts documented on AMBARCHI‘s Black Truffle label.

AMBARCHI has released numerous recordings for labels such as Touch, Southern Lord, Editions Mego, Drag City, Kranky and Tzadik. His solo release Sagittarian Domain was voted #1 in Spin magazine’s Best Avant albums of 2012.

His latest release is Quixotism which was listed in The Wire magazine’s top 50 releases of 2014. He was also named one of Pitchfork’s Experimental Artists of the Year for 2014, along with Matthew Shipp.

Visiting Nurse Live

Comprised of electronic drums, keyboards, bass, and effected guitar, VISITING NURSE features long time collaborators Jon Hill, Mike Seymour, and Syd Bishop creating music that seems to somehow straddle the gap between the organic and inorganic, a cyborg pastiche of jazz influenced composition, and rigid structures. For fans of Boards of Canada, Clams Casino, and Biosphere.

“Mystical country, like an eerie yellowing photograph” – David Bowie

“A small but grand statement, recorded in a week, but achieving country-soul greatness”
– UNCUT * * * * stars

“MC Taylor writes folk music that is at once firmly steeped in tradition and immediately accessible.” – NPR Music

“Fans of Will Oldham and Bill Callahan will find much to admire in the work of MC Taylor, a revivalist who also lectures in folklore.” – Guardian UK

HISS GOLDEN MESSENGER is Durham, North Carolina-based songwriter M.C. Taylor, in partnership with multi-instrumentalist and recordist Scott Hirsch, who lives in Brooklyn, New York. The pair have been playing music together for nearly two decades. Taylor and Hirsch are clear that they draw inspiration from a variety of sources, including the blue-collar mysticism of Ronnie Lane and Richard & Linda Thompson; the high haunted atmospheres of John Martyn and Talk Talk; and American vernacular music writ large (from Archie Brownlee to the Staple Singers; Charlie Poole to Merle Haggard).

William Tyler is a Nashville guitarist and composer. He spent years woodshedding and touring with Nashville groups like Lambchop and Silver Jews before breaking away to focus on his own version of instrumental guitar music. 2010’s Behold the Spirit, William Tyler’s first album under his own name, was celebrated by Pitchfork as “the most vital, energized album by an American solo guitarist in a decade or more” and established him as a critical favorite, the picker who, according to his friend and tour mate M.C. Taylor from Hiss Golden Messenger, “connects the dots between Sandy Bull, Richard Thompson, Bruce Langhorne, and Reggie Young.”

PILE. The indisputable heroes of Boston’s burgeoning indie rock scene hardly need an introduction. The band’s name speaks volumes to most, and to the rest… it soon will. Earning the reputation of “your favorite band’s favorite band,” the quartet (Rick Maguire, Kris Kuss, Matt Connery, and Matt Becker) have been setting the DIY indie punk scene ablaze since 2009, developing a unanimously praised back catalog in the process and a legion of diehard fans throughout the entire country and abroad. The band have toured heavily over the years, playing all ages venues and basements in the spirit of DIY culture with peers Speedy Ortiz, Big Ups, LVL UP, Two Inch Astronaut, Krill, etc. as well as support shows with bands like Obits, Ex Hex, and Metz. Their new album, You’re Better Than This, comes out March 3 on Exploding in Sound.

The Wrists are a band from Louisville, which exploded on the scene with their first release, a cassette on AuralgamiSOUNDS in January. Consisting of Colin Kellogg, Jason Sparks, McKinley Moore, and Matt Filip, The Wrists are the most exciting new band around!

WAXEATER are “diggin’ through the ditches, burning through the witches, eatin’ pizza, taco-ing our riffs, having one dude named rob, riding in vanne frank, drinknig bourbon, gettin’ electrocuted, lovin’ america, havin’ a baby, poking smot, and slamming in the back of our dragula.”

Somewhere between punk and blues – a porch and an alley – lies Radiator King, the performing/recording name of Boston native and Brooklyn-based Adam Silvestri. Established in 2011, Radiator King’s music shows influences from both Dylan and Strummer with a sound described by Boston blog Allston Pudding as something akin to what “Tom Waits locked in a room for a month with nothing but a copy of Springsteen’s Nebraska” might produce. Whether alone with a guitar or backed by a band, Radiator King embodies the raw energy of punk, the grit and intricacy of Delta Blues, and the lyrical potency of folk in “songs that are the sonic equivalent to an old whiskey bar at the end of a dirt road.”

The members of GOODBYE JUNE have spent much of the past decade honing their skill as songwriters along with their proficiency as vocalists and musicians. The sum of their collective efforts makes for a greater musical experience. They typically write together and draw off of each other’s ideas. Being strong songwriters individually, and even stronger as a unit, there is never any shortage of material to build songs around. They have no set method to the songwriting process; the only constant is that everyone gets involved at some point. The fact is, the cousins of GOODBYE JUNE are constantly working on their music and perfecting their artistry, because they know that’s what it takes to make music that matters. Their debut album Nor The Wild Music Flow was released in 2013 on Cotton Valley Records.

THE SAL SHOW is a musical extravaganza consisting of several versions of thee one and only, Sal Cassato, by use of his two favorite performance mediums; visual projection interaction and rock ‘n roll [technically that’s three, Sal! -ed.].
