DAUGHN GIBSON, THE DELOREANS, and JONATHAN WOOD & LOWE SUTHERLAND at ZANZABAR, Tuesday, July 16th

DAUGHN ZBAR for web

Cropped Out and The Other Side of Life are proud to present:

DAUGHN GIBSON (Carslile, PA; on Sub Pop)
THE DELOREANS
(Louisville, KY)
JONATHAN WOOD & LOWE SUTHERLAND
(from Louisville, KY; members of OLD BABY and SAPAT)

Tuesday, July 16th
at ZANZABAR
2100 S. Preston
8 PM doors, 21-and-over
$6 advance tickets available online here: http://zanzabarlouisville.ticketfly.com/event/287929-daughn-gibson-louisville/ and at Zanzabar; $8 day-of-show

Let’s get a few facts straight right off the bat. The name is DAUGHN GIBSON – rhymes with Jaughn, or Raughn. He was born in the village of Nazareth, PA, and currently resides in the sleepy college town of Carlisle, PA, where he frequents local watering holes like The Cave and Alibis. He’s 6’5″, hovers at 200 pounds, and has a head of jet-black hair thicker than a porcupine. He played drums in the group Pearls & Brass for a number of years, touring the US to small but enthusiastic crowds, and if you tag them as “stoner-metal” it will go to show that you’ve never actually listened to them. For a few years in-between, Daughn was a trucker, sure, but he’s also been packing boxes in an un-air conditioned warehouse, climbing up commercial broadcast towers with untested levels of radiation, working the register at an adult bookstore, doing sound at dive bars and collecting unemployment checks to earn a living. DAUGHN GIBSON first entered the daydreams and fantasies of the general public in the spring of last year, care of his critically-acclaimed debut album All Hell. At once both foreign and familiar, Daughn’s music is immediately striking – through the use of dusty thrift-store records and cutting edge technology, Daughn shook the ghosts out of scratchy Christian folk records and baptized them as fierce Americana with his booming baritone voice. His songs are as frequently tender as they are prurient, as hopeful as they are brimming with despair. It’s on Daughn’s second album and Sub Pop debut, Me Moan, that he truly reveals himself to the world. If All Hell was a gritty black-and-white movie, Me Moan is a widescreen IMAX 3D extravaganza. While the roots of sample-based music remain, these songs are performed live, lushly detailed and richly orchestrated. To name but a small selection, live drums, pedal steel, horns, house strings, bagpipes and organs appear on this record, but never does it feel over-stuffed – every instrument or melody is perfectly in place. It’s worth noting that guitarists John Baizley (of Baroness) and Jim Elkington (of Brokeback) provide stunning performances on the record.

THE DELOREANS are one of Louisville’s most accomplished groups, with two albums to their credit, Love Outrageous and American Craze. The latter, released in 2011, is “not only executed with care, but filled with fun, contagious, hook-riddled songs” — Steve Morgan, Louisville Music News.

JONATHAN WOOD & LOWE SUTHERLAND
are well known to connoisseurs of Louisville music, primarily for their main musical vehicles OLD BABY and SAPAT, respectively. They’re taking a dynamic duo detour down a ramshackle dirt road, riding a pink Cadillac into the sunset of a February night. Will they fly off the handle, riding high like Thelma & Louise into an expansive western sky? Or will they keep it down-to-earth, dusting up your jacket and filling your lungs with exhaust while they peel out, squealing their tires? There’s only one way to find out, dear listener…

MADAME MACHINE, TEMPLE OF THE GOLDEN DAWN, and THE GOSPEL TRUTH at ZANZABAR, Thursday, June 20th

Cropped Out and The Other Side of Life present:

MADAME MACHINE (Louisville, KY; on Noise Pollution)
TEMPLE OF THE GOLDEN DAWN (Louisville, KY)
THE GOSPEL TRUTH (Austin, TX; on 12XU)

Thursday, June 20th
at ZANZABAR
2100 S. Preston
$6, advance tickets available here: http://zanzabarlouisville.ticketfly.com/event/285823-madame-machine-louisville/.
9 PM, 21-and-over!

MADAME MACHINE is a Louisville trio consisting of David Cundiff (Lucky Pineapple, Bodyhammer), Salena Filichia (Julie of the Wolves), and Forrest Kuhn (Ennui, Sunspring, Black Cross). They’ve released one excellent 7″ on Louisville’s Noise Pollution label, and have played with the likes of The Teeth, Parlour, Softcheque, Hal Dolls, and other local delinquents. They’re rapidly becoming known as one of the best bands in town, so don’t miss them!

TEMPLE OF THE GOLDEN DAWN was founded in early 2012 for the purpose of studying spiritual awakenings through low-frequency bombardment as well as transcendental mind expansion using electric six-string techniques. The founding four members (Scott Brooks [guitar, vocals], J. Brian Reese [guitar, vocals], J Brent Stewart [bass], and Pinker Lichvar [drums]) have come together from the remnants of other Orders & Secret Societies (Les Debutantes, L&N, Manchuria, The Ravenna Colt) to seek, together, further enlightenment and a Universal Knowledge.

Austin’s THE GOSPEL TRUTH have been knocking around since 2007, but it’s only been in the past two years that vocalist/saxophonist/keyboard player Mark Tonucci’s quartet have really caught fire. All-malicious-intent in a way that runs contrary to Austin’s party vibe, they’ve emerged as one of the town’s top live bands in the process. Not only is it hard to come up with a regional precedent for THE GOSPEL TRUTH, it’s almost as tough to ID an album as out of time as A Lonely Man Does Foolish Things, which will be released on 12XU Records this June 18th.

There isn’t going to be any shortage of words on the new MERCHANDISE full length LP Totale Nite… Tampa, Florida is a different sort of place to be from then the major cultural cities of influence… Sometimes the more isolated locations produce more uniqueness in the absence of stimulation or bigger opportunity. With MERCHANDISE, you can’t just look at the surface because there is so much more in the collective spirit of the surrounding art and music, solo projects, additional bands, the music that came before in its richness and depth. Totale Nite is the distillation of experience, working hard, thinking deep while letting the spirit move forward unhindered. This record captures so much beyond any kind of obvious influence focusing the self-produced and recorded atmosphere into an even more distinct MERCHANDISE sound, dreamy dense post-punk drifter ballads that are as textured and dynamic as they are laden with pop sensibility.

MILK MUSIC are a band of American artists who make cosmic electric soul rock on the subject of life and the human condition. Their impeccable songwriting and style can be compared to artists such as the Velvet Underground, Gun Club, Neil Young & Crazy Horse, and the Meat Puppets. Their latest LP entitled Cruise Your Illusion is out now on compact disc and digitally through Fat Possum Records. The vinyl was self-released by the band.

destruction

Hailing from Tempe, Arizona, DESTRUCTION UNIT deal in their own sort of desert rock: ripping riffage, pounding drums, ominous atmosphere, damaged vocals. Spin magazine calls them “The best American band to hit the stage since The Stooges, The Velvets and The MC5.”

MOUNT CARMEL, NEIGHBOR, and LAST YEAR’S MEN at LISA’S OAK STREET LOUNGE, Wednesday, May 22nd

Astro Black Records, Cropped Out and The Other Side of Life are proud to present:

MOUNT CARMEL (Columbus, OH; on Siltbreeze Records)
NEIGHBOR (Louisville, KY)
LAST YEAR’S MEN (Chapel Hill, NC; on Sophomore Lounge)

Wednesday, May 22nd
at LISA’S OAK STREET LOUNGE
1004 E. Oak Street
9 PM, 21-and-over, $6
Please note: Lisa’s Oak Street Lounge accepts CASH ONLY!

For those swayed by the magisterial authenticity of MOUNT CARMEL on their eponymous 2010 debut album: its 2012 follow-up Real Women finds the band honed and sharper, thus delivering what might be the best sophomore album released by an American blues-based power-trio since ZZ Top’s Rio Grande Mud. Nods to Free, Humble Pie, even Trapeze can be sussed out in the mix, but at the end of the day, Real Women is straight-up MOUNT CARMEL all the way. Searing leads, smokey vocals, thundering rhythms, cascading drums, hyperbolic hyperbole… it’s all here. MOUNT CARMEL brings back the spirit of 1973 like no one else. The only difference now is better weed and shittier barbiturates. It’s hands-down pure rock, no frills. Nary a retro contrivance is to be heard. These guys live it for real. Honest.

NEIGHBOR of Louisville, Kentucky draws from punk, experimental and underground influences as well as classic soul, country and western to produce a unique breed of heavy American rock n’ roll. Recommended for fans of Big Business, Harvey Milk, and Motorhead. Featuring former and current members of Bu Hao Ting, Twenty First Century Fox, Waxeater, and ZCFOS.

“When I first met [LAST YEAR’S MEN] songwriter and guitarist/vocalist Ben Carr through our mutual friend (and producer of their last record) Dan McGee, a couple years ago in their shared stomping grounds of Chapel Hill, NC, the skin-and-bones, baby-faced frontman wasn’t old enough to be allowed into the bar. To be honest, I’m not sure he’s even old enough as of today, but the kid can write songs beyond his years, and if the acned, nervous, no-bullshit garage-pop punk of Clawless Paw isn’t glaring proof of potential, I’ll grab the gas, skate to the sock-hop, and burn the gym down myself… LAST YEAR’S MEN play a full on intoxicated and intoxicating wall-of-sound garage rock that has us transfixed as the first time we heard the Reigning Sound or the Drags. A little touch of the flower punk of the Black Lips, a lot of the fiery revolt of the Nashville garage scene (Ranch Ghost, Jeff The Brotherhood, Useless Eaters, etc) and much love for the back catalogs of Crypt and Sympathy For The Music Industry all concentrated… Recommended for those into Ty Segall, G Green, White Fence and all those aforementioned bands.” — Permanent Records.

FAUN FABLES front woman Dawn McCarthy is a renaissance lady who enjoys singing, theater, folklore, dancing, traveling, nature and studies of the hearth and food history. Her performing background was forged in oral tradition amidst a large musical family in Spokane, Washington and continued with studies in music theater, rock bands, Action Theater, Polish theater and ethnomusicology. Celebrating their 10th year as one of independent music’s most substantive bands, Louisville’s COLISEUM return with their fourth full-length, the stunning Sister Faith, to be released on April 30 on Temporary Residence Ltd. Expanding on the anthemic direction the trio veered toward on 2010’s highly acclaimed House With a Curse, Sister Faith‘s 13 songs are the most dynamic and immediately captivating of the band’s career, bristling with galvanizing melodies at the collision point between punk and noise-rock. The first album to be recorded in producer J. Robbins’ recently relocated Magpie Cage Studios, Sister Faith is also the first Coliseum recording to feature new bassist, Kayhan Vaziri, in addition to contributions from some of the groups’ closest friends and musical peers: Wata of Boris, J. Robbins (Jawbox, Burning Airlines), Jason Farrell (Swiz, Bluetip), Elizabeth Elmore (Sarge, The Reputation), Chris Colohan (Burning Love, Cursed), Sam James Velde (Night Horse, Bluebird), and Jason Loewenstein (Sebadoh, The Fiery Furnaces) all make small but memorable contributions.

ANWAR SADAT “sound totally Boston circa 1982: aggressively shouted vocals, aggressive rhythms, jaggedly distorted guitars and just enough melody above the noise to make them catchy as hell.” – New York Music Daily. ANWAR SADAT recently finished a tour of the East Coast in support of their debut album Gold, which was released on vinyl this spring by Sophomore Lounge.

TROPICAL TRASH have caused quite a stir with their debut 7″, Fear of Suffering, on Sophomore Lounge. Still Single describes TROPICAL TRASH as an “Excellent combination of thrashing energy and solid ideas that break apart and recombine in novel, tuneful ways.” They’re just as thrilling live as on record, so don’t miss this opportunity to rock out with ‘em!

ZOMES, WALFORD / TROTTER / RILES, and SHEDDING at ZANZABAR, Wednesday, April 24th

The Other Side of Life presents:

ZOMES (Baltimore, MD; on Thrill Jockey Records)

with

WALFORD / TROTTER / RILES (Louisville, KY)
SHEDDING (Louisville, KY)

Wednesday, April 24th
at ZANZABAR
2100 S. Preston
9 PM, 21-and-over
$6 advance tickets available online here: http://zanzabarlouisville.ticketfly.com/event/248341-zomes-louisville/; $8 day-of-show

The new album Time Was marks a new stage in the evolution of ZOMES, a musical project begun by Asa Osborne (formerly of Lungfish). The album marks the first recordings of ZOMES as a duo and the first time an album was recorded in a studio and not on a cassette deck. It all began when Asa Osborne was performing at the Perspectives Festival in Sweden, where he met Hanna through a mutual friend in the Skull Defekts. During Osborne’s performance, Hanna, a vocalist, ended up improvising along with the music with stunning results. Realizing the complimentary aspects of their musical personalities and their natural musical affinity, Hanna joined Asa on stage for an improvised performance in a Stockholm art gallery several days later. Asa invited Hanna to perform with him again at the Bowery Ballroom in New York City on the last date on his tour with Beach House, beginning a trans-Atlantic exchange of ideas. Time Was is an expansion of the ZOMES aesthetic, an open and natural collaboration between like-minded individuals. While there are certainly obvious musical connections to Osborne’s work with Lungfish, the duo of Asa and Hanna have built on this considerable foundation and expanded the form to glorious new heights. ZOMES will play Zanzabar as a trio at this, their Louisville debut.

WALFORD / TROTTER / RILES is the trio of Britt Walford, Tyler Trotter, and Zak Riles, all of whom have been active within the Louisville music scene, and in the greater world, as musicians, promoters, sound engineers, and enthusiasts. Walford is best known as an integral member of Louisville legends Slint and Evergreen, as well as a player in Squirrel Bait, Maurice, The For Carnation, and many other musical entities. Riles is best known as a member of the Temporary Residence Ltd. band Grails, while Trotter has performed with the Phantom Family Halo, and was the longtime soundperson for the California Sound Trio. This show marks their first-ever Louisville show as a trio!

SHEDDING has been a solo vehicle for Connor Bell since 2001, and has released several items over those years available at Ocio and Hometapes. SHEDDING‘s music is meditative and still, eerie and unsettling — yet with a spectacular sense of melody.
