Spider Bags "Frozen Letter"

SPIDER BAGS formed in 2005 as a long-distance project between close friends who had known each other since their high school days in New Jersey. Dan McGee had just witnessed the demise of his NYC-based punk band DC Snipers. Feeling he had gone as far as he could with the three-chord punk genre, and not wanting to repeat himself, he began writing volumes of songs with his friend Gregg Levy. He began sending these new songs in demo form to three of his NJ friends who had since relocated to Chapel Hill, North Carolina. McGee and Levy drove down to NC to record with the full band, intending it to be more of a visit than anything. But something special happened during that recording, and eventually McGee and Levy would relocate to the area as well. That original lineup recorded their excellent debut, A Celebration of Hunger (Birdman, 2007), with Brian Paulson and then toured the country together for a couple of years before eventually going their separate ways. But McGee found himself more prolific than ever, and he and Levy decided to keep SPIDER BAGS going. A number of different players toured and recorded with the band while they finished another full-length, Goodbye Cruel World, Hello Crueler World (Birdman, 2009), and recorded half a dozen singles. Shortly after, Levy would move back north, but he continues to be a contributing member when he can.

During the 2011 recording of the band’s third album, Shake My Head (Odessa, 2012), the current lineup consisting of Steve Oliva (bass) and Rock Forbes (drums) was finally solidified. Having gone through so many members by this point, McGee couldn’t help but wonder if the guys would stick around for the long haul. But slimming down to a three-piece, the band members found they connected musically, and most importantly, they all liked each other. Building upon the foundation laid down by its predecessor, their 2014 release on Merge Records Frozen Letter rocks with the clairvoyance of three musicians who have spent a lot of time recording and touring together over the last few years. “When we started this record, we weren’t even thinking about it being released. We just did it to have fun and keep moving forward,” says Forbes, who has been playing with SPIDER BAGS since 2008. This approach, and McGee’s intent to make a “weird, trippy record,” allowed the band to push itself further out into the psychedelic frontier than ever before, aided by engineer/producer Wesley Wolfe.

After a bit of a hiatus and whatnot, GANGLY YOUTH of Louisville, Kentucky (and Charleston, West Virginia) return! Their sound is a mix of jangly noise, fuzzy pop, and a no-perfection required style. One might be reminded of bands like Sonic Youth, The Pixies, or warped cassettes playing favorite pop songs.

BUTCHER BOY‘s sound is that of warped and electric avant-folk, colored with jazz chords, spacious textures and post-rock dynamics, all executed onstage with precision not unlike a conservatory senior recital. Their music requires attention and patience, but it rewards close listening. The members of BUTCHER BOY are true masters of their craft.” – Jeff Beam.

From the genius mind that is Ben Traughber, comes the incredible music project titled DREAM EYE COLOR WHEEL. Blending elements of bedroom-pop and quick jangles, one will be tossed into a world that sounds made up of cartoon Halloween specials with fuzzed out hooks, destined to be locked in your mind for weeks on end.

sixbells

SIX BELLS is a Louisville, Kentucky-based band consisting of longtime scene veterans Brandon Butler (formerly of Canyon and Boys Life), Ryan Patterson (Coliseum, Whips/Chains), Keith Bryant (formerly of Coliseum), and Forrest Kuhn (killii killii, formerly of Ennui). They combine the lyricism of Butler’s solo songwriter work with the taut, “Louisville-style” rhythm section of Bryant and Kuhn, plus Ryan Patterson’s tasteful, melodic guitar.

wildhoney

WILDHONEY are a pop band through and through. While some have thrown around words like “dreamy” and “hazy” to describe their brand of guitar pop, there’s something deeper going on that can’t be summed up in an easy blog tag. Songs such as “Soft Bats” and “Like Me” aren’t just catchy songs, they’re songs that stick with you long after they end. This is due to the simple, yet great interplay between vocals and guitars that weave throughout almost effortlessly. “Get Out Of My Dreams” from their upcoming single finds WILDHONEY digging a bit deeper and crafting an almost droney pop song that not only is catchy but pulses with life.”

expertalt

If you’re a fan of the 1980s UK indiepop movement known alternately as C86, twee, or anorak pop, it’s safe to say you need Baltimore’s EXPERT ALTERATIONS in your life. The trio’s debut, self-titled cassette is available for download at their bandcamp site, and it’s safe to say that if you’re a fan of Jesus and Mary Chain, Close Lobsters, or even contemporary Elephant 6-related bands, you’ll love their sound!

As the front man for Falling Forward and seminal emo torchbearers Elliott — the band in which he spent most of his adult life — Chris Higdon’s voice was (and remains) the quintessential prototype. Variations of the Louisville native’s magnetic delivery continues to crop up in young groups hoping to achieve even a sliver of the respect and adoration those progenitors earned within the scene. Rounded out by bassist Bryan Todd, Nick Stinnett on drums and guitarist Matt Wieder, who cut his teeth in the early ’90s hardcore outfit Mouthpiece, as well as River City rock staples The Enkindels, FRONTIER(S)‘ manages to seamlessly bridge the gap between the melodic, ethereal indie rock of Higdon’s Elliott-era material and the blistering hardcore punk of the other members’ earlier efforts. Much like the city it calls home, FRONTIER(S) is hopelessly Midwestern. Louisville never accepted east or west coast definitions of post-anything, and the quartet is no different. Serrating guitars, tightly wound bass, and dime-stop drums are the brick to Higdon’s mortar as he switches between airy tones and boot-shaking roar. The band channels enough hardcore angst and Husker Du-style buzzsaw guitar to make even the most jaded scenester flip their wig, while featuring pounding rhythms and a swirling wall of sound that land the listener somewhere smack in the middle of post-punk England and Washington D.C.’s Revolution Summer.

When it comes to the subject of rock and roll, DEAD HALOS doesn’t claim to be re-inventors of the proverbial wheel, nor do they wish to live exclusively in the so-called glory days of years past. The Louisville, Kentucky-based band, which includes Tony Ash (Trophy Wives) on guitar, Aaron Sortman (Waxeater, Neighbor) on drums, Max Balliet (The Ladybirds) on guitar, Cassie Green on bass and Kenosha, Wisconsin’s Stephanie Vogt (Donoma) on vocals, is here to be heard, loud and proud, whether you approve or not. The band’s musical influences are displayed proudly on their collective sleeves, but make no mistake, this is no half-assed nostalgia act or pleasant stroll down memory lane. DEAD HALOS are doing their goddamndest to revitalize the spirit and sound of real rock and roll music, the kind we all grew up loving until, like so many things before, it became a watered down parody of itself. Come one come all. Bring your party hat, your dancing shoes….and maybe some earplugs.

THE PINK VULTURES succinctly describe themselves as “American Punk Rock n’ Roll.” What more needs to be said? Nothing, really, other than their members — Daryl Sullivan, Chris Payne, Brent Starkey, Karri Bedan, and Ella Jean Lumpkins — are an assortment of long-time scene veterans and relatively fresh faces. But they’ll let their music speak for themselves!

ANDREW RINEHART is the latest moniker from Louisville, KY-born and Los Angeles-based songwriter Andrew Sellers. First active musically as a teenager in Louisville’s underground hardcore scene, Sellers’ band Flight Nineteen played regionally with acts like At The Drive In and Hot Water Music. His first solo album Memories Are Hunting Horns, released in 2010 under the pseudonym Saredren Wells, walked a tightrope between more conventional songwriter fare and the off-kilter world of artists like Daniel Johnston, Bonnie “Prince” Billy, and Sufjan Stevens. Sellers relocated to New York City, eventually co-founding both The Body Actualized Center, a DIY arts space in Brooklyn, and the band Splash, whom he toured the US with in the Summer of 2012. Turning his attention back to solo work in 2013, Sellers adopted the moniker Rinehart and released “The Funeral Home Sessions,” a 3-song EP of covers. Distilling his many aliases down to simply ANDREW RINEHART, Sellers is now set to release Everything (Parts I, II, and III), his most ambitious work yet. An album in 3 EP installments, Everything highlights Sellers’ chameleon-like talent for genre-hopping, in turns both melancholy and magnanimous, a deft synthesis of all of his previous projects.

newmother

NEW MOTHER NATURE is a relatively new band on the Louisville scene, but filled with familiar faces. Members of NEW MOTHER NATURE are current or former members of Old Baby, The Phantom Family Halo, Natural Geographic, and many more. They quickly became one of our favorite Louisville bands, and we think you’ll like ‘em as well. Their sound “is rich with straight-forward melodies… all while maintaining a sense of playful, if cautious experimentation.” — Syd Bishop, LEO Weekly.

dane

DANE WATERS is one of Louisville’s brightest musical talents. As a solo performer as well as member of Sapat, she displays an impeccable melodic sensibility, and has a voice so wonderfully haunting, it sends chills down your spine. Her most recent releases, Opera Arias and A Harp with Teeth that is Drooling and Crying, is available on bandcamp as well as finer Louisville record stores.

BLACK BIRDS OF PARADISE describe themselves as “just another post modern psyche band with vibraphone filling the role usually reserved for guitar or organ.

CHARLES RIVERA is a guitarist from Louisville, Kentucky currently known for “continually redefining what living in the moment can truly entail….Charles’ style of no-holds-barred slobber-knocker music is said to have similar effects to eating human meat in the Canadian wilderness, thus earning him his nickname of ‘The Jazz Wendigo.’”

He’ll be playing in two groups this evening, QEN (a duo with drummer Greg Morris), and larger combo THE CHARLES RIVERA ENSEMBLE.

ABOUT STAR DUCK CHARITIES:

For over 15 years the members of Star Duck Charities have volunteered at St. Joseph’s Children’s Home located on Frankfort Ave. in Louisville, Kentucky. Originally, members volunteered their time and effort every second Saturday in August to operate the “Duck Pond” booth at the Home’s annual fund raising picnic. Now, its members have formed Star Duck Charities as a way to do more for needy children in the Greater Louisville area year-round. With six founding board members and over fifty volunteers, Star Duck Charities aims to provide much needed items and services to some of Louisville’s youngest in need.

At Star Duck Charities, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, 100% of all funds and donated items will go directly to children in need; none of its members or volunteers profit from donations. Perhaps our most important program is our monthly birthday party. Each month we take those children at St. Joe’s who have a birthday during that month to Gatiland for pizza and games. Afterwards each child gets a $100 shopping spree to a store of their choice.

In addition to our birthday party program, annual school supplies drive, and other community outreach we will continue to work with our founding corporate sponsor Cambridge Construction. With our 16 years of service to St. Joe’s through the Duck Pond, we have raised over $36,000 and been the source of countless smiles at the annual picnic. As opportunities arise and we expand our efforts, we will always be preparing for our involvement with the booth that is our namesake, the “Duck Pond”.

gotobeds

THE GOTOBEDS‘ members come from Pittsburgh, PA, a place notorious for keeping great local bands to itself. But the racket these guys kick up on their first album, Poor People Are Revolting, might be too strong for the city to contain. Guitarists Eli Kasan and Tom Payne spent the last few years as part of the local hardcore band Kim Phuc. Joined by bassist Gavin Jensen and drummer Cary Belbeck, they bring that energy to THE GOTOBEDS, a rowdy, ramshackle party house of a band, built on the intersecting bedrock of post-punk and indie rock. On Poor People Are Revolting, there’s something crazy going on in every room, the front porch and the backyard: a party that never dies down or seems to stop, even as the neighbors complain and the cops drive past. Working from the spirit and fundamentals of a small handful of influences — the design sense and intellectual rowdiness of The Fall; the constant evolution and masterful poker faces of Wire, from whose drummer these guys borrowed their name; the sturdy, heroic melodic sense and layered tape-loop production of Mission of Burma — THE GOTOBEDS paint a dirty, driven, vulgar portrait of Rust Belt restlessness.

“One of the strongest American rock debuts in years, Poor People Are Revolting is an obscene gesture hoisted toward anyone who’d claim that the genre is dead.” — NPR.

OCIFER is “an up and coming garage rock band that you want to become a fan of before everyone else does.”

SEA HERO is an instrumental band from Louisville, Kentucky that creates “an ebb and flow of noise and harmony.” SEA HERO recently finished recording their third album at Kevin Ratterman’s La La Land studio, to be released in 2015.

BLACK STATIC LINE is a Louisville, Kentucky & Nashville, Tennessee-based space-rock band that experiments with slow tempos at light speed echoing off the nearest galaxy. Beginning as a noise project in 2002,  BLACK STATIC LINE has evolved into its present quartet format, with Cole Street (Hollow Ox) at the helm on guitar and vocals, Devin Lamp (The Ascent of Everest) on bass, Corey Taylor (The Ascent of Everest) on lap steel and Matt Bach (Dave Cloud and the Gospel of Power) on drums. On their brand-new sophomore release Enlil (Meltface Records), the band delves into a beautiful dream of outer-space aided by soaring vocals, whale song-sounding steel licks, crushing bass fuzz, and shimmering guitar melodies.

purling

Continuing their credo of ‘no limits,’ the Philadelphia-based trio PURLING HISS fail to repeat themselves, shaking out a bunch of weirdo pop numbers rife with ramshackle; tactile and free. PURLING HISS have broken out of the basement, run through the bedroom and are now loose, out in the streets. Their new album, Weirdon, was released this September on Drag City.

STATE CHAMPION started in 2006 as a moniker for the early acoustic experiments of Ryan Davis (Cropped Out, Sophomore Lounge). It has since evolved into a rock n’ roll band with a Chevy van and not one, but two vinyl records. Their sophomore record, Deep Shit, received quite a level of acclaim. Because it’s awesome! “STATE CHAMPION uphold the long and storied history of Louisville and Chicago’s music interconnected… Digging into the dregs of Royal Trux sludge Americana, angular punk, and torch ballads done with malice, STATE CHAMPION accentuates the punk suffix in cowpunk. Weird, wonky, and wild, STATE CHAMPION are a sight to behold live with their unbridled energy and extremely art-damaged take on electric folk.” – The Decibel Tolls.

Chris Forsyth & the Solar Motel Band

The first studio release by CHRIS FORSYTH AND THE SOLAR MOTEL BANDIntensity Ghost, is a career-defining statement of purpose and a near virtual history tour of late 20th century electric guitar, touching on widescreen psychedelia, art rock, the late-70’s New York scene, and the melting pot of early 90’s underground bands, but writing a whole new chapter, unforeseen by most in 2014. Whereas last year’s acclaimed Solar Motel album was a Forsyth solo album recorded with an ad-hoc studio band, upon its release Forsyth put together a group of players to tour the record — bassist Peter Kerlin, guitarist Paul Sukeena (Spacin’), and drummer Steven Urgo (ex-The War on Drugs) — who took his vision to another level. Forsyth brought this group, now called THE SOLAR MOTEL BAND, into the studio in late 2013 to make Intensity Ghost, largely forsaking the epic sprawl of Solar Motel in favor of a startlingly diverse and focused set of songs. The result is a 5-track masterwork and a rare combination of power and grace. Just as The Grateful Dead or Popul Vuh were able to embrace broad spectrums of sound and transform those influences, THE SOLAR MOTEL BAND distills Forsyth’s message while avoiding any genre exercises. Intensity Ghost is a giant sounding record, it’s hall-sized psychedelia filled with hooks and an immediacy rarely found in such sweeping, cinematic music. CHRIS FORSYTH AND THE SOLAR MOTEL BAND synthesize rather than emulate what has come before, producing something all their own.

IMG950696

MA TURNER’S FATUFAIRFE began in late Summer 2014 as a means for Ma Turner (CROSS, Warmer Milks, Salad Influence) and John Phillip Farmer (Salad Influence, Arcane Rifles, Birddog) to perform songs with a full group that the two had been touring as a duo in the Spring and Summer of 2014.  Bringing in John Ferguson (Apples In Stereo, R. Stevie Moore, Big Fresh), David Farris (Bernie Worrell, Tatsuya Nakatani, Jack McDuff, R. Stevie Moore, Tallboys, Club Dub) and Travis McGirr (Blood Pheasant), Turner and Farmer were able to expand the material into broader territories. The end result is a culmination of a handful of barn jam sessions as well as two live performances (one being the 2014 Cropped Out Festival in Louisville, KY) which led up to the recording of their self-titled long playing album, scheduled for release in Spring/Summer 2015.

SPARKS.MOORE is the duo of Jason Sparks and McKinley Moore, who also play in The Wrists. They are also former members of Natives.
