It’s safe to say that PETER BRÖTZMANN is one of the most revered jazz musicians alive today. A saxophonist as well as clarinetist, BRÖTZMANN has released over fifty albums as a bandleader, and has appeared on over one hundred albums total. His1968 recording Machine Gun is considered one of his many classics within the realms of free jazz and European free improvisation, but he certainly didn’t stop there. BRÖTZMANN has also recorded or performed with a gigantic roster of musicians as diverse as Han Bennink, Fred Van Hove, Derek Bailey, Frank Wright, Cecil Taylor, Keiji Haino, Mats Gustafsson, Ken Vandermark, Conny Bauer, Joe McPhee, and his son, Caspar Brötzmann, a notable guitarist in his own right.

HAMID DRAKE is widely regarded as one of the best percussionists in jazz and improvised music. Incorporating Afro-Cuban, Indian, and African percussion instruments and influence, in addition to using the standard trap set, Drake has collaborated extensively with top free-jazz improvisers around the world, including trumpeter Don Cherry; pianist Herbie Hancock; saxophonists Pharoah Sanders, Fred Anderson, Archie Shepp and David Murray; and bassists Reggie Workman and William Parker.

A native of The Bronx, New York’s WILLIAM PARKER is certainly no slouch in the company of BRÖTZMANN and DRAKE. Indeed, the bassist began his career in the 1970s playing with Cecil Taylor, and released his first album as a leader, Through Acceptance of the Mystery Peace, all the way back in 1981. He has played with David S. Ware, Jimmy Lyons, Derek Bailey, John Zorn, Charles Gayle, Wayne Horvitz, Roscoe Mitchell, Matthew Shipp, and in the group Other Dimensions in Music. The main force behind New York’s Vision Festival, PARKER is also an avid poet and author.

It is an absolute pleasure and an honor to bring musicians of this caliber to DREAMLAND!

MARTIN BISI, a New York indie rock performer and record producer, has been at the crossroads of indie, punk, avant garde, noir/cabaret rock, and electronic music since the early 1980’s in New York City. At the B.C. recording studio he started in 1981 with the help of Brian Eno, MARTIN BISI has helped to realize albums by Sonic Youth, Swans, Dresden Dolls, Cop Shoot Cop, John Zorn, Africa Bambaataa, Material/Bill Laswell, Boredoms, Herbie Hancock’s “Rockit,” White Zombie, Foetus, Helmet, Unsane, Serena Maneesh, U.S. Maple, Christina and Jon Spencer’s Boss Hog, and countless other indie, experimental and post-punk records. His most recent solo album, Ex Nihilo, was released on April 1st, 2014 by La Société Expéditionnaire records.

The duo INVISIBLE THINGS consists of Mark Shippy (ex-U.S. Maple) and Jim Sykes (ex-Parts and Labor, Grooms), who met in 2008 when they backed Marnie Stern supporting her This is It… album, touring the U.S. with Gang Gang Dance and sharing bills with Quasi, Sic Alps, Talk Normal, and others. After this they began collaborating as a duo, sporadically, as Sykes was touring with Grooms and living in London, but still managed to play Steve Albini’s PRF BBQ and similar such events. INVISIBLE THINGS‘ debut, Home IS the Sun, was released on Porter Records in fall 2012. The new INVISIBLE THINGS album, Time AS One Axis, was recorded by MARTIN BISI (Swans, Sonic Youth, Herbie Hancock) at BC Studios in Brooklyn, New York.

Comprised of electronic drums, keyboards, bass, and effected guitar, VISITING NURSE features long time collaborators Jon Hill, Mike Seymour, and Syd Bishop creating music that seems to somehow straddle the gap between the organic and inorganic, a cyborg pastiche of jazz influenced composition, and rigid structures. For fans of Boards of Canada, Clams Casino, and Biosphere.

Combining boundless creative imagination with a deep reverence for American folk, blues and country music, MARISA ANDERSON‘s guitar playing is fluid, emotional, dexterous and original. Signal to Noise magazine calls Anderson’s guitar work “Utterly fabulous”, TIme Out London refers to her playing as “Stunning…haunting and evocative”, Pitchfork calls her latest record, ‘Mercury’, ”Brilliant” and Wire Magazine says, “Her sound has strength in restless variety…Anderson’s playing is heartfelt and utterly American, free from grandstanding and steeped in respect for the old tradition.” Before going solo in 2009, Anderson played guitar in the Dolly Ranchers and the Evolutionary Jass Band. In the past two years, Anderson’s music has landed her festival appearances in Europe and the United States and opening slots for artists including Godspeed You! Black Emperor, The Devil Makes 3 and Sharon Van Etten. In August 2013, KBOO Community Radio released a split 7″ featuring Anderson and Elizabeth Cotton. Anderson’s music has been featured on NPR and on soundtracks including ‘Smokin’ Fish’, ‘For the Love of Dolly’, ‘Girls Rock’, and ‘Gift To Winter’. Her writings on music and activism have appeared in Bitch Magazine, Leaf Litter, and in Rock ‘n’ Roll Camp for Girls, the book. Her new album, Traditional and Public Domain Songs, is now available from the Grapefruit Record Club.

For WOODEN WAND‘s new album Farmer’s Corner, James Toth decided to try something different: instead of spending a week in a studio with the same people, the same engineer, the same equipment and the same state of mind, he would record in fits and starts, whenever – and WHEREever – he felt like it, recording new songs as he wrote them. Over six sessions in four studios spanning three states, he began amassing tracks. Toth then chose his favorite ten songs for Farmer’s Corner, which is, remarkably, the very first self-produced Wooden Wand album. Toth is abetted on the majority of the tracks by electric bassist Darin Gray (On Fillmore, Jim O’Rourke, Grand Ulena, Dazzling Killmen), and guitarists William Tyler (Lambchop, Silver Jews, Yo La Tengo) and Doc Feldman. Toth also called on friends in St Louis, Nashville, and his current home in Lexington, KY to produce an album that splits the difference between the protracted psych of his work with the Vanishing Voice and the World War IV and the more lonesome, bucolic styles of his more recent albums with Michael Gira and the Briarwood Virgins. The result is the most “Wooden Wand” album in the Wooden Wand discography, reflecting Toth’s omnivorous musical and narrative obsessions. The arrangements — think Little Feat covering Neil Young’s Harvest Moon — only serve to highlight his capabilities as both a songwriter and storyteller. The collected songs form an easy entry into the ever-growing Toth output, where outlaws on the run, epic landscapes, endless travels, agitated insomniacs and ditch-digging memory-evaders lurk behind every turn.

Hello There,

We (SWANS) have recently completed our new album. It is currently being mastered at the time of this writing. It is called To Be Kind. The release date is set for May 13, 2014. It will be available as a triple vinyl album, a double CD, and a 2XCD Deluxe Edition that will include a live DVD. It will also be available digitally. In addition, I am thinking of releasing it as a USB “stick” / flashdrive (with special packaging), so that this ultimate, high quality version can be listened to from beginning to end, without interruption (the album is a little over 2 hours long).

The album was produced by me, and it was recorded by the venerable John Congleton at Sonic Ranch, outside El Paso Texas, and further recordings and mixing were accomplished at John’s studio in Dallas, Texas. We commenced rehearsals as Sonic Ranch in early October 2013, began recording soon thereafter, then completed the process of mixing with John in Dallas by mid December 2013.

A good portion of the material for this album was developed live during the SWANS tours of 2012/13. Much of the music was otherwise conjured in the studio environment.

He has been a frequent contributor to Swans and Angels of Light and is currently playing with King Crimson)…

It’s kinda crazy how quickly September has flown by — in a flash! Well they say time flies when you’re having fun, but we haven’t even gotten to CROPPED OUT yet! 9:20 — Borbetomagus (Goosebump Galley): New York trio (2 saxes, electric guitar) are an acquired taste, but what a taste it is! We’ve been long-time fans, without ever having the chance to see them live, so this is another one-in-a-lifetime experience as they rarely play off the East Coast.
10:00 — Wolf Eyes (Phreedom Hall): Quite possibly the best band Michigan’s produced since the Stooges. Really, I believe that!
10:35 — Human Eye (Turners Tavern): Second-best Michigan band after Wolf Eyes! What is it with Michigan and eyes anyway? The dang place looks like a glove!
11:05 — CAVE (Goosebump Galley): One of the highlights of Cropped Out #1, along with a chaotic drunken Oaks night two years ago, Cave brings some sorta kraut-y dance party for yo’ dome.
11:45 — Matt Sweeney & Bonnie “Prince” Billy (Phreedom Hall): We’ll be honest, we haven’t been a huge Billy fan, but Superwolf, the album these two geniuses recorded over five years ago, was a damn fine moment. Everybody rub your belly!

INSECT FACTORY is music from Silver Spring, MD musician Jeff Barsky. INSECT FACTORY focuses on texture and mood, building layers of dense sounds that slowly evolve into hypnotic and atmospheric drones. Since the 90’s, Barsky has continuously played in bands and improvisational collectives, and has performed frequently on the east coast of the U.S., and also in Canada, throughout Europe, and Japan. Barsky’s projects have shared the stage with acts as diverse as Richard Pinhas, Nels Cline, Lungfish, and Carla Bozulich, and he has performed at the Suoni Il Per Popolo festival in Montreal, Terrastock ’08 in Louisville, KY, and D.C.’s Sonic Circuits, Queering Sound, and Fringe Festivals. In later 2011, INSECT FACTORY released a split 7″ with RST (New Zealand), and followed it up with the Melodies from a Dead Radio LP (Fabrica/Insectfields) in early 2012. Most recently, INSECT FACTORY appeared alongside Six Organs of Admittance and Charalambides on “For Lee Jackson in Space”, a gargantuan online compilation benefitting ALS Research. “Music that evokes the feel of a plane ride through the clouds and the
surreal world of dreams…INSECT FACTORY‘s music grows with repeated listens.” – The Wire.

mAAs is the duo of Louisville musicians Connor Bell (also of Shedding) and Tim Barnes. Louisville resident and drummer extraordinaire, the list of Tim Barnes‘s collaborators is too long to list here, but it includes Jim O’Rourke, Silver Jews, Neil Michael Hagerty and the Howling Hex, The Tower Recordings, and countless others. Most recently, Tim Barnes played drums with the resurrected lineup of The For Carnation, as well as with MV+EE at Cropped Out in November, 2011. Connor Bell has released several items over the years under the name Shedding, available at Ocio and Hometapes, all of which is meditative and still, eerie and unsettling — yet with a spectacular sense of melody. This performance marks their debut as mAAs, an electronic duo.

PUBLIC SPEAKING is the music of Brooklyn solo artist Jason Anthony Harris. Utilizing found objects, radio, tape recorder, and vocoder, he pores over pedals to loop, warp and augment these sources. He sings on his knees, in a semi-circle of these devices and percussive clutter. The result is a soulful and rhythmically dense experimental music. His performances are highly improvisational, with an emphasis on immediacy and site-specific actions.

GLENN JONES is a unique voice working in the decades-long tradition of American Primitivism. What sets him apart from the many devotees to this style is the combination of expressive playing and technical skill, most significantly his inventive use of alternate tunings and partial capos. As anyone knows who has seen him perform, Glenn is a remarkable storyteller, and his songs reflect that talent. The songs on Glenn’s latest, My Garden State, are evocative and redolent, and serve as a testament to Glenn’s talent for conveying a wide array of emotions, many times in one song, without saying a word. My Garden State was written in the New Jersey home where Glenn’s family moved in 1966, while he was caring for his mother who suffers from Alzheimer’s. My Garden State was recorded by Laura Baird in Allentown, NJ. Laura joins Glenn on the first proper song, “Across the Tappan Zee” on banjo, interweaving her plaintive melodies with Glenn’s gentle picking. Laura’s sister Meg, who was a founding member of Espers and plays with Laura as The Baird Sisters, also joins in on the final minutes of “Going Back to East Montgomery,” an eight minute long composition that showcases Glenn’s ability to craft a long form piece that is at once expansive and immediate. The songs on My Garden State could have been written by no one except Glenn Jones, brimming joy, sorrow, and the complex in-between that makes life worth living.

NATHAN SALSBURG is an archivist, producer, guitarist, and writer based in Louisville, Kentucky. Since 2000 he has worked for the Alan Lomax Archive, for which he currently serves in the capacity of Curator, compiling and producing album releases of the renowned folklorist’s recordings, and managing the Archive’s online audio, photo, and video catalogs, and its popular YouTube channel. Salsburg has also produced archival releases for the Grammy-winning Tompkins Square label, and he curates the Twos & Fews imprint of Chicago’s Drag City record company. As an acoustic guitarist, he has released two critically acclaimed albums — a duet with Chicago’s James Elkington, entitled Avos (Tompkins Square, 2011) and a solo record called Affirmed (No Quarter, 2011) — and has appeared on WNYC Radio’s “Soundcheck” program and in NPR’s “Tiny Desk Concert” series. No Quarter will release his second solo album, Hard For to Win and Can’t Be Won, in Autumn 2013. NATHAN BOWLES is a musician and teacher living in the mountains of southwestern Virginia. He and his bandmates in the Black Twig Pickers steep themselves in local traditions of Appalachian folk music and dance. In December of 2011 he holed up for a couple of days at Black Dirt Studios to record and mix his first solo banjo record, all performed on a handmade 5-string banjo built by his friend Greg Galbraith at Buckeye Banjos. Over about 7 hours and a bottle of Elmer T. Lee, he laid down the material for A Bottle, A Buckeye, which was released on LP in 2012 by Soft Abuse.
