DAVID GRUBBS is Distinguished Professor of Music at Brooklyn College and The Graduate Center, CUNY. He is the author of Good night the pleasure was ours, The Voice in the Headphones, Now that the audience is assembled, and Records Ruin the Landscape: John Cage, the Sixties, and Sound Recording (all published by Duke University Press) as well as the collaborative artists’ books Simultaneous Soloists (with Anthony McCall, Pioneer Works Press) and Projectile (with Reto Geiser and John Sparagana, Drag City). DAVID GRUBBS has released sixteen solo albums and appeared on more than 200 releases. In 2000, his The Spectrum Between (Drag City) was named “Album of the Year” in the London Sunday Times. He is known for his cross-disciplinary collaborations with poet Susan Howe and visual artists Anthony McCall, Angela Bulloch, and Josiah McElheny, and his work has been presented at, among other venues, the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, MoMA, the Tate Modern, and the Centre Pompidou. Louisville native DAVID GRUBBS was a member of the groups Gastr del Sol, Bastro, and Squirrel Bait, and has performed with Tony Conrad, Pauline Oliveros, Luc Ferrari, Will Oldham, Loren Connors, Jan St. Werner, the Red Krayola, and many others. He is a recipient of the Berlin Prize and a Foundation for Contemporary Arts award in Music/Sound, a member of the board of directors of Blank Forms, and director of the Blue Chopsticks record label. 2025’s Whistle from Above is the first solo collection David’s released since 2017’s Creep Mission. During the 2020 shutdown, David played what he precisely quantified as “a shit-ton of guitar,” more than he could recall playing ever previously. Reinvigorated by this period of enforced woodshedding, he produced a series of new pieces, mostly for guitar, but also a piano composition and an exceptionally eerie bit of musique concrète. These seemed to imply a solo set that would tour marvelously when the time was right again. Whistle from Above is a colorful, compulsive set of instrumental pieces in which David and his chosen collaborators interact amid the steady roll of an expansive landscape based in the hypnosis of David’s immediately recognizable guitar style.

KEN BROWN is a founding member of Tortoise and Pullman, and former member of Bastro, Gastr del Sol, and Directions. In 2025 three solo albums credited to Louisville drummer and percussionist Tim Barnes were released with production, mixing, and performances by Brown: Lost Words, Noumena, and Inside Energy. Also in 2025 Brown released Cease and Desist by Jungle Boogie, recordings of his duo with Slint drummer Britt Walford. January 2026 saw the return of Pullman, Brown’s group featuring Tim Barnes, Chris Brokaw (Come/Codeine), Curtis Harvey (Rex), and Doug McCombs (Tortoise/Eleventh Dream Day) with their third album, III, released by Western Vinyl.

KEN BROWN will have live visuals created by SEETHINGS, Louisville’s own Tim Furnish, a multi-faceted musician, graphic designer, photographer, and VJ. Furnish is a founding member of classic Louisville bands Parlour, Cerebellum, and Crain and has been a member of The For Carnation and Aerial M. As SEETHINGS he has provided visuals for Old Baby, Shedding, Flanger Magazine, Jungle Boogie, Jaye Jayle, and many others. SEE MORE of SEETHINGS:

1200 is a classically trained musician and experimental hip hop artist from Louisville, KY. Prior to obtaining his Bachelor of Music Education at the University of Louisville, he had the chance to perform at the Meyerson Symphony Center in Dallas, TX and the Jungfrau Music Festival in Interlaken, Switzerland. Though 1200‘s music can be considered hip hop, it is also heavily influenced by neo-classicism and fusion. 1200’s unique blend of talent, experience, and poly-stylism also appears in local musical ensembles that include the hip hop band Citizens United and fusion group Monolith. His most recent creative endeavor is the 1200 tour, a mixed ensemble that features DJ Deuce, keyboardist and guitarist Nick B, soprano vocalist Jazmyn Aria, and baritone vocalist Tyler Dippold. In addition, the group’s structure is also fluid for live shows. In their performance at Headliners Music Hall in 1200‘s hometown, the typical five-piece ensemble was joined onstage by a twelve-piece chamber chorus and string quintet.

WUSSY are a four-piece rock band from Cincinnati, Ohio fronted by ex-Ass Ponys frontman Chuck Cleaver and Lisa Walker. The two began performing together in 2001 as a result of Cleaver’s stage fright when asked to perform a brief run of solo shows. The duo’s first show was largely unplanned and still went without incident.. so they agreed to continue and expand. Mark Messerly joined in 2002 as bassist and utility man, and Dawn Burman joined on drums shortly thereafter. The four-piece released three full-length albums and one EP on their native Cincinnati’s Shake It label. Their work has met with critical praise from Rolling Stone and SPIN, both of which gave the band’s second and third albums four stars each, in addition to favorable reviews from Village Voice, NPR, Washington Post, Uncut, and many other press outlets. The “Dean of American Critics” Robert Christgau placed the band’s first two albums (Funeral Dress and Left for Dead) on his Best of the Decade list, and their third, self-titled album ranked tenth in his best of 2009 Dean’s List. Burman left the band in early 2009 and was replaced by veteran Cincinnati drummer Joe Klug.

ABOUT IASPM-US:

IASPM-US represents the United States branch of the International Association for the Study of Popular Music. IASPM-US has been an important part of the popular music landscape since the early 1980s and serves as a forum for a range of scholarly and other approaches to popular music. The past several decades have witnessed a period of dramatic and exciting growth in the field of popular music studies. The centrality of popular music to notions of personal and collective identity, geographic identity, political affiliation, technological change and adaptation, the economic and legal parameters of “intellectual property,” and the sociology of consumer-based fan cultures, makes it likely that popular music studies will only continue to grow in importance and intellectual value.

The US branch of IASPM holds true to the goals of our parent organization in the belief that popular music has much to teach us about this world. We place an emphasis on the writings and other activities of US-based scholars, journalists, and musicians–focusing not only on American music but also on musics from across the globe, and “Music 2.0″ made and consumed in virtual soundscapes.

For a professional organization, we are unique for our inter-disciplinary scope–spanning fields such as musicology, sociology, cultural anthropology, literary studies, cultural studies, American studies, and so on. The democratic, inclusive outlook of IASPM-US extends not only across different academic disciplines but also to the inter-professional level. In other words, we seek the contributions and expertise of popular music critics, journalists, industry workers, and cultural administrators in addition to university academics. Click our “How to Join” page for information on becoming an IASPM-US member.

The IASPM-US 2015 Annual Conference will take place at the University of Louisville, February 19-22, 2015.

Visiting Nurse Live

Comprised of electronic drums, keyboards, bass, and effected guitar, VISITING NURSE features long time collaborators Jon Hill, Mike Seymour, and Syd Bishop creating music that seems to somehow straddle the gap between the organic and inorganic, a cyborg pastiche of jazz influenced composition, and rigid structures. For fans of Boards of Canada, Clams Casino, and Biosphere.

Two Good Shows Tomorrow!

It’s going to be tough to decide on which of these to go to — that is, if we end up not having to work tomorrow night!

The Web
Brett Ralph’s Kentucky Chrome Revue
David Grubbs
Rude Weirdo
Straight A’s
at the Bard’s Town, 1801 Bardstown Road. 9 PM, $6, apparently now it’s all ages. This show, presented by Louisville’s excellent Noise Pollution label, should be a good one as it’s well-stocked with artists that (should) need no introduction. If you need more info, you might find it at the Facebook event here: http://www.facebook.com/events/145355115567233.

Also, over at Zanzabar (which is at 2100 S. Preston, of course), Natural Child and State Champion are playing (here’s the event invite: http://www.facebook.com/events/255787627819138). Natural Child played an excellent set at this year’s Cropped Out, so if you missed it, don’t sleep on this show! It’s $5, 21-and-over, and starts at 9 PM.

No matter what you end up doing, have a fantastic New Year!
