FAUN FABLES began in 1997, when Dawn ‘the faun’ McCarthy left the bands and cabarets of NYC for the wider world. She grew up in eastern Washington state enjoying drawing, dance, and make-believe amongst a large family. On Early Song (1999) she sang with “a voice as haunting as an abandoned coal mine, while it dances with the even tempo guitar that seems to pluck itself,” (CMJ). Mother Twilight (2001) was called “A collection of songs that seem to rove wondrously through the mountain pines at dusk,” (SF Weekly). Dawn performs FAUN FABLES most often as a soloist or with frequent collaborator Nils Frykdahl of Sleepytime Gorilla Museum. But she also enjoys working with other artists, musical and otherwise; The Transit Rider, a FAUN FABLES full length musical inspired by her years in NYC, premiered 2002 in San Francisco with a cast of thirteen. FAUN FABLES tours the world regularly, studying landscape, culture and the art of feasting with locals.

partyknüllers

PARTY KNüLLERS is the experimental garage jazz duo of Fred Lonberg-Holm (cello, guitar, electronics) and Ståle Liavik Solberg (drums). The band was described by Eyal Hareuveni as “an intimate meeting of the two restless and adventurous musicians” with an “obsessive and playful need to explore and invent new sounds and new forms of musical communication”.
Colin Greene says: “[The] sound and phrasing of his cello frequently resemble guitarists such as Thurston Moore, rich in fragmented overtones, and can sound like a Harrier Jump Jet – taking off and landing” while “Solberg’s fractured percussive playing intensifies the tension.” Before setting out as a duo, they played together in VCDC (with reed player Frode Gjerstadt and vocalist Stine Janvin-Motland), Gorilla Ass Piano (with bassist Per Zanussi) as well as a number of other ad hoc groupings including sax/clarinet player Keefe Jackson. Since forming the PARTY KNüLLERS, they have also recorded and performed with analog synth wizard Jim Baker. Independently they have worked with a who’s who of underground (and mainstream) musics from Steve Beresford to Wilco, from to John Russell to Peter Brötzmann. Their low-fidelity approach to improvising and recording and their influences of dance music, garage rock, free jazz and European Free Improvised lends itself to a raw simplicity of composition, arrangement, and performance.

bonnie

The man who acts under the name Will Oldham and sings and composes under the name BONNIE “PRINCE” BILLY has, over the past quarter-century, made an idiosyncratic journey through, and an indelible mark on, the worlds of indie rock and independent cinema. With his highly individualistic approach to music making and the music industry, one that cherishes intimacy, community, mystery, and spontaneity; his brilliance has captivated fans and made Bonny one of our most influential and beloved songsmiths.

A pastoral suite of electronics, acoustic guitars, synthesizers and rhythm machine, Breslin is the latest work from FLANGER MAGAZINE, the duo of Chris Bush and Ben Zoeller, whose previous work in the group Caboladies serves as a touchstone. Imitation strings, electronic interruptions, and nylon acoustic guitar figures touched with reverb are the perennial players in this work.

SIR RICHARD BISHOP, KARK, and ROBERT MILLIS at THE NEW VINTAGE, Friday, April 17th

Formerly the guitarist for the legendary Sun City Girls, Richard Bishop released his first solo record (Salvador Kali) in 1998 on John Fahey’s esteemed Revenant label under the moniker SIR RICHARD BISHOP. Since then he has released albums on a variety of labels: Improvika, Elektronika Demonika, and While My Guitar Violently Bleeds (Locust Music), Fingering the Devil (Southern Records UK), Polytheistic Fragments and The Freak of Araby (Drag City), Hypostasis: A Work in Three Parts (VDSQ Solo Acoustic Series), and many more. His most recent LP, The Tangier Session, is now available on Drag City.

KARK is a massive free ensemble from Louisville which  features a revolving cast of over 50 musicians including members of Sapat, Valley of Ashes, Virgin Eye Blood Brothers, Son of Earth, Taiwan Death and The Belgian Waffles. Their debut record The Hermit (HP Cycle, 2007) consists of three extended pieces that offer spaciously abstract atmospheres as well as moments of righteous cacophony. Utilizing a multitude of brass, reeds and percussion the album careens through numerous passages where intricate harmonics are created from the densely layered sounds. When the full force of the ensemble is unleashed individual elements appear and quickly recede into the squall. As the music nearly becomes unhinged, the sound disintegrates into a Godzilla-like rockist thud propelled by the rhythm section and soaring horns before drifting to a sparse conclusion.

millis-victrola

ROBERT MILLIS has been a member of the lauded underground bands Climax Golden Twins and AFCGT, a solo artist, and a frequent contributor to the Sublime Frequencies label. He has scored long and short films, created sound installations, produced and designed audio projects, and released many LPs and CDs, including the heralded Victrola Favorites book and compilation released on Dust-to-Digital in 2008. MILLIS says his work “veers haphazardly between sound art, music concrete, instrumental, improv, field recording, song and collage. I have a deep interest in folk and traditional music, so imagine Pete Seeger trying to cover Revolution 9 by the Beatles.”

Spawned from the formidable Louisville, KY collective known as Black Velvet Fuckere, SAPAT resides as the centrifugal force in this Midwestern psychedelic madrigal set in the psychosexual backwaters of the mighty Ohio River. For the entirety of the ‘00 decade, members have kept busy collaborating with and/or massaging the egos of various and sundry avant-pontiffs such as Robert Fripp, Magik Markers, Dead Child and Eugene Chadbourne – when not honing the orgone energy of SAPAT.

This show celebrates the release of their new LP, A Posthuman Guide to the Advent Calendar
Origins of the Peep Show, on Sophomore Lounge Records!

Limbo as the space between heaven and hell where unblessed babies float, sighing; limbo as the supple-spined Calypsonian dance craze: here exists The Immoralist, the new record by ELISA AMBROGIO. The Immoralist lies at the wicked crossroads of Wilson Pickett’s electric wail and the sweetest of Wilson Phillips harmonies.

Watch the video for ELISA AMBROGIO‘s “Superstitious” here:

The seven songs on NATHAN BOWLES‘ new album Nansemond deploy banjo, percussion, piano (his childhood instrument), tapes, and — for the first time — his robust voice to explore the rugged country between the poles of Appalachian old-time traditions and ecstatic, minimalist drone, moving effortlessly between composed sections, improvised passages, and field recordings. This forking-path approach follows his wide-ranging work as an ensemble player with the Black Twig Pickers (banjo, percussion), Pelt (struck and bowed percussion), Steve Gunn (drums, piano, banjo), Hiss Golden Messenger (banjo), Jack Rose, and others. For this record, he has assembled a sensitive group of collaborators from beyond the rosters of those groups: Tom Carter (guitar), Joe Dejarnette (guitar), Steve Kruger (fiddle, voice), and Jason Meagher of Black Dirt Studio (recording, production, mixing.)

Watch NATHAN BOWLES play “Sleepy Lake Tire Swing” here:

CHAMPION ZOZ is the duo of Ryan Davis (State Champion, Tropical Trash) and MA Turner (MA Turner’s Fatubyfairfe, Cross, Salad Influence, Warmer Milks), here making their Louisville debut on their debut tour! What soulful tunes will this wild-n’-wooly duo produce? Step to it, get to the show early, and find out!

It’s been almost five years since DEAD RIDER unleashed its brand of dark psychedelic funk. Since that first show in their hometown of Chicago, IL they have produced three LPs, toured the United States extensively, and played a handful of UK gigs including the ATP festival in 2011 and 2012. A few great players have been in and out of the group in that time. Todd Rittmann (vocals, guitar, harmonica), Andrea Faught (synth, trumpet, vocals), Matthew Espy (drums), and Thymme Jones (synth, trumpet, vocals) have been the current lineup for the last two years and have furthered the band’s reputation as a challenging and entertaining powerhouse. Their most recent album, Chills on Glass, was released this spring by Drag City.

Watch the video for DEAD RIDER‘s “Blank Screen” here:

TROPICAL TRASH have caused quite a stir with their two 7″ records, Fear of Suffering, and Think Back Kick a Beer, both on Sophomore Lounge. Still Single describes TROPICAL TRASH as an “Excellent combination of thrashing energy and solid ideas that break apart and recombine in novel, tuneful ways.” They’re just as thrilling live as on record, so don’t miss this opportunity to rock out with ‘em!

purling

It takes balls to let PURLING HISS get in your face- their records are a half-corroded, screaming roar of high-end guitars crushed together, obliterating vocals and drums with their singular assault. Well, if you’ve got balls, get ready to swing ‘em! PURLING HISS have broken out of the basement, run through the bedroom and are now loose, out in the streets, blasting one of the great guitar albums in the past couple minutes. Their new album, Dizzy Polizzy, comes out April 22nd on Drag City.

newmother

NEW MOTHER NATURE is a relatively new band on the Louisville scene, but filled with familiar faces. Members of NEW MOTHER NATURE are current or former members of Old Baby, The Phantom Family Halo, Natural Geographic, and many more. They quickly became one of our favorite Louisville bands, and we think you’ll like ‘em as well. Their sound “is rich with straight-forward melodies… all while maintaining a sense of playful, if cautious experimentation.” — Syd Bishop, LEO Weekly.

NEW BUMS, WREKMEISTER HARMONIES, and RYLEY WALKER at DREAMLAND, Wednesday, March 19th

newbumslarge

The New Media Project and The Other Side of Life are proud to present:

NEW BUMS (Members of SIX ORGANS OF ADMITTANCE and SKYGREEN LEOPARDS; on Drag City)
WREKMEISTER HARMONIES (Chicago, IL; on Thrill Jockey)
RYLEY WALKER (Chicago, IL; on Tompkins Square)

Wednesday, March 19th
at DREAMLAND
810 E. Market Street
7 PM DOORS
$10. Advance tickets available here: http://www.ticketfly.com/event/509417-new-bums-louisville/.

NEW BUMS‘ debut album, Voices in a Rented Room, is sweet and sensitive, hard and nasty, everything you need from your new record. NEW BUMS play their songs on mostly acoustic guitars, making it easy to hear what they’re saying – but then they swathe their voices in reverb, making it a little harder again. What’s life if you don’t have to try, right? The other reason for the reverb is that the Bums just LURVE that addle-headed state of mind where you know your life is wrong but you don’t do much about it – and so the songs are alternatively, moments of sodden introspection that turn to sharply focused acting-out fantasies, the types of which we all need to get ourselves by. NEW BUMS rhymes with two Bums, which is prolly closer to the truth – the band’s made up of Ben Chasny and Donovan Quinn, on guitars and singing. For the record, they employed a rhythm section, but what really makes the air move is the relationship between those guitars and voices, hanging in the thick and reverberant air. For those of us who know Ben from Six Organs of Admittance and Donovan from Skygreen Leopards, NEW BUMS is exciting for bringing them together in ways they couldn’t possibly have realized in their parent bands. This is new territory for both Bums, but also carries the whiff of their former selves. Voices in a Rented Room is out today, so make sure you haunt your local record flop, they ought to have this if they have any self-respect left. Stick out your thumb, and pull in a bum – starting now and through the spring and the rest of time, etc. This show is their Louisville debut.

Listen to “Black Bough” by NEW BUMS here:

JR Robinson has been writing and recording music as WREKMEISTER HARMONIES in various incarnations since 2006. His most recent album, You’ve Always Meant So Much To Me, was written to accompany a film Robinson shot in decimated Detroit locations, the desert of Joshua Tree and decaying forests of Tasmania. In 2012 he brought together some of the most revered musicians in the black metal and experimental music worlds (Jef Whitehead of Leviathan, Sanford Parker and Andrew Markuszewski of Nachmystium, Jamie Fennelly aka Mind Over Mirrors, Mark Solotroff of Anatomy of Habit, Bruce Lamont of Yakuza, and more) to perform the 38 minute composition at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago to much acclaim and a sold out theater. The collaborators for the live performance joined Robinson at Steve Albini’s Electrical Audio later that year to record the composition in full. This show is his Louisville debut.

Listen to an excerpt of You’ve Always Meant So Much to Me by WREKMEISTER HARMONIES here:

RYLEY WALKER is a 24 year-old singer/songwriter and guitarist from Chicago, Illinois. Having kicked around Chicago’s experimental free/noise music scene for several years, Ryley recently turned to a folk-rock sound inspired by some of his heroes, among them Tim Hardin, Tim Buckley, and Bert Jansch. The result is a poised and accomplished debut album, recorded in Chicago by Cooper Crain (guitarist/keyboardist in Cave). The album will be released by Tompkins Square in April 2014.

“With the charming swagger of jazz-folk troubadour Tim Buckley and the resonant, full picking style of Bert Jansch, “The West Wind” comes from Walker’s first widely available release, a three-song 12”. With acoustic guitar in hand and a voice like browned butter, Walker swings and sways in a lush string-and-piano arrangement right out of Buckley’sStarsailor; it slowly picks up to a swirling gallop without bucking the rhythm.” – NPR Music

Visiting Nurse Live

Comprised of electronic drums, keyboards, bass, and effected guitar, VISITING NURSE features long time collaborators Jon Hill, Mike Seymour, and Syd Bishop creating music that seems to somehow straddle the gap between the organic and inorganic, a cyborg pastiche of jazz influenced composition, and rigid structures. For fans of Boards of Canada, Clams Casino, and Biosphere.

BLUES CONTROL, RAW THUG, and JONATHAN WOOD & LOWE SUTHERLAND at ZANZABAR, Monday, February 4th

Cropped Out and The Other Side of Life are proud to present:

BLUES CONTROL (on Drag City; from Coopersburg, PA)
RAW THUG (on Loin Seepage; from Louisville, KY)
JONATHAN WOOD & LOWE SUTHERLAND (from Louisville, KY; members of OLD BABY and SAPAT)

Monday, February 4th

Don’t lose control — dig BLUES CONTROL! Following a circular path in order to access the unknown, Russ and Lea nab chaos in a plastic cup and crush rock into diamonds, or something that looks like them anyway. Valley ho! Their new record, Valley Tangents, “is like drugs for your ears.”

Watch the video for BLUES CONTROL‘s “Iron Pigs” from Drag City Limits here:

(Photo of Arsenio Zigonoto by Ron Jasin via LEO Weekly.)

RAW THUG is the brainchild of one Arsenio Zigonoto, recently profiled in Louisville’s LEO Weekly 2012 People Issue here: http://leoweekly.com/news/2012-people-issue-arsenio-zignoto. Needless to say, he is one of Louisville’s musical treasures. To quote:

He once played a plastic bag at a show — “There were lots of drums and it sounded like … an evening gown amongst the chaos” — and has shared his sounds with bands like Sapat, Softcheque, his own RAW THUG moniker, and most recently Mindhorn, amongst countless other sit-ins and randomness.

JONATHAN WOOD & LOWE SUTHERLAND
are well known to connoisseurs of Louisville music, primarily for their main musical vehicles OLD BABY and SAPAT, respectively. For the first time in public (that we know of), they’re taking a dynamic duo detour down a ramshackle dirt road, riding a pink Cadillac into the sunset of a February night. Will they fly off the handle, riding high like Thelma & Louise into an expansive western sky? Or will they keep it down-to-earth, dusting up your jacket and filling your lungs with exhaust while they peel out, squealing their tires? There’s only one way to find out, dear listener…
