PAPIER TIGRE‘s music is firmly entrenched in the tradition of inventive, challenging punk but combines elements of experimental pop compositions and aggressive math-rock. The band understands that a song being intelligent and complex need not exclude it from having a raw, danceable energy. For their latest album Recreation (2012), the band teamed up with John Congleton to produce their most significant work yet. Pushing the limits of their unusual line-up (drums, 2 guitars, percussion, vocals), the band has matured into a devastatingly efficient unit, with instruments, ideas and personalities bouncing off each other in an audible culture of creativity. The 10 songs are an impressive account of the band’s ability to balance different atmospheres, underlined by original rhythmic patterns, minimalist melodic lines and distinctive vocal hooks, the whole blossoming under Congelton’s sonic prowess. This is the French band’s first time visiting Louisville!

ANWAR SADAT “sound totally Boston circa 1982: aggressively shouted vocals, aggressive rhythms, jaggedly distorted guitars and just enough melody above the noise to make them catchy as hell.” – New York Music Daily. ANWAR SADAT will have just finished a tour of the East Coast in support of their debut album Gold, which was released on vinyl by Sophomore Lounge.

Summer 2009 Wez ate brownies had a vision. He told big black Zack and called Seth 3 times. They started the Nashville-based three piece rock band called NATURAL CHILD. Maybe known as much for their incessant rambling on-stage banter as their unprecedented pure rock sound, NATURAL CHILD are often described as “the greatest rock n’ roll band in the world”, a title which the trio has worked mercilessly hard to gain… and they have the balls to show for it. NATURAL CHILD want to play in Jamaica and want to play at the pyramids. They have a plan that involves Jack White to befriend Keith Richards and be the opening act on Rolling Stones farewell tour, thus having “the greatest rock n’ roll band in the world” torch officially passed on to them. Not Jack White. These guys love to party. And they love to ride in that van. Oh man. NATURAL CHILD are touring in support of Hard in Heaven, their most recent album.

STATE CHAMPION started in 2006 as a moniker for the early acoustic experiments of Ryan Davis. It has since evolved into a rock n’ roll band with a Chevy van and not one, but two vinyl records. Their sophomore record, Deep Shit, was released last year on Sophomore Lounge Records, and has received quite a level of acclaim. Because it’s awesome! “STATE CHAMPION uphold the long and storied history of Louisville and Chicago’s music interconnected… Digging into the dregs of Royal Trux sludge Americana, angular punk, and torch ballads done with malice, STATE CHAMPION accentuates the punk suffix in cowpunk. Following their long-awaited studio debut You Win Some, You Loser (Sophomore Lounge, 2010), Chicago’s favorite skateshop pop quartet ANIMAL CITY is back on wax with their follow-up full-length, See You In The Funny Pages. Though two and a half years without a proper record might seem like a healthy hunk of downtime, don’t let the calendar fool you. The boys have been busy. Since first forming their creative kinship nearly 7 years ago, key songwriters Sal Cassato and Dakota Loesch have knocked out a dozen-or-so collections of lo-fi, homegrown, harmonious rock jams ranging in style from stoner/loner acoustic wayfaring to full-on, funked-up and jazzed-out anthems. “I can’t deny the enjoyability that comes with a well-edited, snappy rock band like this… Even as I get older and uglier, I refuse to entirely hate anyone and everyone on the grounds that they are not as bitter as myself; bands like Animal City are chicken soup for the soul.” –Yellow Green Red.

DAVID DANIELL & DOUGLAS McCOMBS first met in early 2006 while touring as members of Rhys Chatham’s six-guitar Die Donnergötter band. Following that tour, the two spent several months trading albums and discussing making music together; they began their musical collaboration when Daniell moved from New York to Chicago later that year to study pedal steel guitar.   These humble beginnings do little to reflect the depth and breadth of each of their talents; both are highly-respected musicians within their circles. Over the years Daniell has collaborated with many notable musicians, including Loren Connors, Rhys Chatham, Tim Barnes, Jeph Jerman, Thurston Moore, Greg Davis, and Jonathan Kane, as well as releasing numerous albums under his own name and with his band San Agustin on labels such as Table of the Elements and Family Vineyard. McCombs is more often seen wielding a bass guitar, whether as a member of Eleventh Dream Day, the acoustic collective Pullman, or the pioneering and inimitable Tortoise; in his role as the driving force behind Brokeback; or through his varied work with the likes of Tom Ze, Azita Youseffi, Will Oldham, Yo La Tengo, and Calexico. Versions, the new double album by DAVID DANIELL & DOUGLAS McCOMBS,was produced by Louisvillian Ken Brown, also a founding member of Tortoise.

FLANGER MAGAZINE is the handsome duo of Chris Bush and Ben Zoeller, who both have also played in the excellent band Caboladies. Expect some unexpected sounds, from the ridiculous to the sublime, in this, their Louisville debut.

DAUGHN GIBSON hails from the Cumberland Valley town of Carlisle, Pennsylvania. The charismatic crooner and sound sculptor’s music sets his subversively witty and colorful tales against an engaging blend of electronic, country and blues. GIBSON’s spirited, DIY approach is informed by his time spent playing in punk and metal bands and stints as a cross-country truck driver. His deep baritone adds to the allure, which posits the handsome balladeer in territory explored by the greats. He’s earned comparisons to the likes of Lee Hazelwood, Scott Walker and Arthur Russell, and contemporary artists like Nicolas Jaar, Magnetic Fields and James Blake. DAUGHN GIBSON’s music first caught the attention of Philadelphia-based indie label White Denim (run by Sub Pop label mate and Pissed Jeans member Matt Korvette), who immediately agreed to release DG’s debut, All Hell, in April 2012. In June of 2012, Dull Knife Records released the 7″ single “Lite Me Up” b/w “The Mark of a Man.” DAUGHN GIBSON’s All Hell won praise from the likes of Pitchfork, SPIN, FILTER, Austin Chronicle, Baltimore City Paper, Philadelphia Weekly, San Francisco Bay Guardian, Brooklyn Vegan, Tiny Mix Tapes, The Needle Drop, and more.

Sic Alps and CROSS at the Kentucky Museum of Art and Craft, Friday, October 19th

LEO Weekly ran my preview today of Friday’s upcoming Sic Alps and CROSS show at the Kentucky Museum of Art and Craft (scroll down to Friday’s entry):

Sic Alps have a not-unpleasant tendency to sound like scraps of an overheard conversation interrupted by a 10-car pileup. To perhaps understand the stops and starts, the utterly lo-fi, heavily fragmented style, know that frontman (and only constant) Mike Donovan drives a cab in San Francisco when he’s not touring. On their new album, the new lineup ditches noisy home recording techniques in favor of a clear, crisp style (including some string arrangements), and the result is like graduating from The Crying of Lot 49 to Gravity’s Rainbow. While former versions have been mystifying, enjoyable and unique, this new recorded version is more cohesive, expansive and epic — without being yawnsome “epic rock.” However, expect a white-hot live performance — their set at the 2010 Cropped Out festival was one of the more blazing moments. —Joel Hunt

Not sure why mention of Lexington’s excellent CROSS was excised, but they’ll be opening the show. Their new album, Die Forever, is now available from Sophomore Lounge.

CROPPED OUT is coming up…

We haven’t had too much to say about the upcoming CROPPED OUT festival, on the weekend of November 11th – 13th here in lovely Louisville, Kentucky, because it seems like it’s all anybody can talk about anyway! I mean, can you believe freakin’ SCRATCH ACID is gonna play?* Me neither, and I’m really stoked!

But the CROPPED OUT fest is far more than just one band. It’s a whole mess of ’em! Including some of our favorite performers ever:

BILL ORCUTT, former guitarist for HARRY PUSSY, and one of the most exciting purveyors of six-string nonsense (even though he only plays four strings, apparently) going today.
MV + EE, the duo of Matt Valentine (formerly of THE TOWER RECORDINGS) and Erika Elder is probably the closest you’ll get to seeing Neil Young live, except perhaps even more damaged. And rumor has it that former TOWER RECORDINGS member TIM BARNES will be joining them!
MOUNT CARMEL is probably our favorite of the new SILTBREEZE roster — straight-ahead Ohio-style boogie rock!
HUMAN EYE might possibly be the best rock band in Detroit right now. Period.

And there’s a whole slew more, including lots of shit we’ve never heard of before! And a bevy of fantastic local artists, including our friends SAPAT, YOUNG WIDOWS, SHEDDING, COLISEUM, CROSS, and lots more!

They got a new web site up at http://croppedoutmusic.com, so check it out and buy your tickets ASAP.** It’s gonna be killer!

*On a side note, how come nobody got it together to bring THE JESUS LIZARD to Louisville during their recent reunion action? Just because Laura Shine has no idea who they are doesn’t mean they weren’t one of the most popular Chicago-style bands to play in Louisville during the 1990s. Our excuse for not booking them is, well, we were too poor to afford their guarantee (as if our shoe-string show budget wasn’t obvious).

**Seriously Louisville, if you sleep on this like you slept on TERRASTOCK 2008, you only have yourself to blame. The prices are good, the venue is centrally located, and if you miss it…

Our friends at CROPPED OUT and SOPHOMORE LOUNGE are putting on this fantastic show tomorrow at Old Louisville’s favorite watering hole, the Mag Bar. Here are the particulars:

The triumphant return of Sophomore Lounge’s pop-slop magicians, GIVING UP (Louisville, KY/Garner, IA) and PUTTING OUT (Chicago, IL). Featuring members of STATE CHAMPION and MEAH!, with special guest openers SLITHERING BEAST (Clark County country cookin’).

JUST ADDED: Louisville heartstring-strummer and friend of the family, Mark Kramer a.k.a. TENDER MERCY will round out the night with some stripped-down, hauntingly sparse acousti…c numbers of his own. For fans of: Little Wings, Red House Painters, Spokane, etc.

This is the last show of a three-week tour for GU/PO, so come on down, buy yourself a beer, drink half of it, pour the rest of it on them, then buy one of their records to say you’re sorry. Then buy yourself another beer, and put a Warren Zevon song on the jukebox. It’s Monday night, what else is there to do?

Though we’ve been relatively inactive lately, we would be remiss if we didn’t mention the upcoming CROPPED OUT Festival, in Louisville during the first weekend in October. CROPPED OUT features some of our favorite current bands, including PISSED JEANS, MAGIK MARKERS, SIC ALPS, and many more. Also, there’s a very strong representation of Louisville musicians at the festival, so it’s not just a buncha out-of-towners. Here’s more, including the weekend’s lineup:

Ryan Davis here, just reminding you (or possibly informing you for the first time) that my friend James Ardery and I are organizing a new music festival called Cropped Out for the first weekend of October (10/1-10/3, 2010) in Louisville, KY. The bulk of the event (Saturday and Sunday) will be taking place at the American Turners Club (3125 Upper River Road) with a Friday night kick-off event just a couple doors down at Kingfish (3021 Upper River Road).
