PARLOUR originally began as a solo project from Tim Furnish following the mid-90s dissolution of Crain – the seminal Louisville rock group he co-founded in the late ’80s. PARLOUR evokes “A unique combination of interweaving guitar shards… driven by a dark, relentless rhythm section.” Their most recent album, Simulacrenfield (released on Temporary Residence), was one of our favorites of 2010 and an instant classic.

newmother

NEW MOTHER NATURE is a relatively new band on the Louisville scene, but filled with familiar faces. Members of NEW MOTHER NATURE are current or former members of Old Baby, The Phantom Family Halo, Natural Geographic, and many more. They quickly became one of our favorite Louisville bands, and we think you’ll like ‘em as well. Their sound “is rich with straight-forward melodies… all while maintaining a sense of playful, if cautious experimentation.” — Syd Bishop, LEO Weekly.

Visiting Nurse Live

Comprised of electronic drums, keyboards, bass, and effected guitar, VISITING NURSE features long time collaborators Jon Hill, Mike Seymour, and Syd Bishop creating music that seems to somehow straddle the gap between the organic and inorganic, a cyborg pastiche of jazz influenced composition, and rigid structures. For fans of Boards of Canada, Clams Casino, and Biosphere.

“Spend some time in Louisville, Kentucky and you will find it is one of the most unassumingly strange places in America. The ratio of grown folks to millennials in attendance at any rock gig seems roughly 3:1. Such events take place in places like caves and chicken coops, among other nontraditional venues. Hip, transgressive people don’t seem to outgrow hip, transgressive things here; no one seems very eager to settle for a life less weird. Catherine Irwin of the great Louisville/Chicago band Freakwater — who lends her inimitable vocal talents to several tunes on Fantasy Error, the latest album by STATE CHAMPION — once joked that the evergreen nature (no pun intended) of the Louisville scene was due to the dearth of area vocational schools. If an album has been made in this young century that better captures the essence of this burg than Fantasy Error, I haven’t heard it.

STATE CHAMPION‘s punked-up country gunk frequently recalls both the Aristotelian pathos of bands like Souled American and Palace Brothers and the character-driven black humor of indie ironists like Camper Van Beethoven and the Supreme Dicks. Mere homage, however, is not STATE CHAMPION‘s line. Singer and head honcho Ryan Davis is a sharp, astute lyricist, the kind of songwriter who probably gets tired of people asking him why he doesn’t try his hand at short story writing. Indeed, Fantasy Error‘s depictions of postmasters and county coroners, Dickensian drinkers and ‘teardrop pushers’ are as vivid as they are familiar, sung with the conviction of a Drag City-damaged Chris Knight. The musicians provide the perfect foil, loose without trying too terribly hard to appear ‘ramshackle.’ Frayed horsehair bows are dragged across fiddle wire and banjos frail for dear life; fuzzy, unfussy electric guitars bend, scrimmage, and howl while subtle synthesizers interject ominously through the din; even the percussion sounds bleary-eyed and broken-up with.

Fantasy Error is a great rock and roll record, equal parts Springsteen and noise scene, as American as broken traffic lights and bad trips.

“The banner yet waves!”

– James Jackson Toth (January 2015)

Spawned from the formidable Louisville, Kentucky collective known as Black Velvet Fuckere, SAPAT resides as the centrifugal force in this Midwestern psychedelic madrigal set in the psychosexual backwaters of the mighty Ohio River. For the entirety of the ‘00 decade, members have kept busy collaborating with and/or massaging the egos of various and sundry avant-pontiffs such as Robert Fripp, Magik Markers, Dead Child and Eugene Chadbourne – when not honing the orgone energy of SAPAT. Their most recent LP, A Posthuman Guide to the Advent Calendar Origins of the Peep Show, was released last fall on Sophomore Lounge Records.

SEASIDE CAVES are a dreamy smear of sticky lip gloss across a sullen, shadowed face; crepuscular hazy androgen neu-wave pop from the New Jersey shore. Listen to their new, debut album here: http://seasidecaves.bandcamp.com.

SIX BELLS is a Louisville, Kentucky-based band consisting of longtime scene veterans Brandon Butler (formerly of Canyon and Boys Life), Ryan Patterson (Coliseum, Whips/Chains), Keith Bryant (formerly of Coliseum), and Forrest Kuhn (killii killii, formerly of Ennui). They combine the lyricism of Butler’s solo songwriter work with the taut, “Louisville-style” rhythm section of Bryant and Kuhn, plus Ryan Patterson’s tasteful, melodic guitar.

R. RING is Kelley Deal & Mike Montgomery. It is voices, guitars and keys. It is sparse, chaotic, abrasive and lulling, often within the same song.

thefervor

THE FERVOR offers a rare example of truth in advertising. With intensity and passion, THE FERVOR adopt the best of rock and roll troubadour tropes and synthesize them into a pastiche that feels unique and familiar, all while seamlessly fitting into the narrative of their native Louisville’s rich musical culture. With husky vocals delivered in a distinct and seductive tone, THE FERVOR‘s Natalie Felker paints mystical, dreamlike imagery. No Depression called her “the Karen Carpenter of indie rock.” Alongside Natalie’s radiant vocals and shimmering keys, the band cultivates hypnotic atmospheres that stomp and crash toward listener-rewarding apexes.

shiveringtimbers

SHIVERING TIMBERS have been honing their considerable craft on relentless tour stops with Shovels & Rope, Jessica Lea Mayfield, The Chapin Sisters, and so many more, resulting in a live presence that combines rock energy, blues/punk passion, and country/gospel reflection.

quailbones

QUAILBONES is a five-piece garage rock band from the disoriented streets of the friendliest small-town in America: Murray, Kentucky. Their debut album will be released this summer on Karmic Swamp.

SAD HORSE is the Portland, Oregon-based duo of Elizabeth Venable (a Louisville native!) and Geoff Soule (formerly of Fuck). Their debut album, Purple on Purple Makes Purple, was released on Water Wing Records, and you can listen to it here: http://sadhorse.bandcamp.com/.

THE FUNS provide an exceptional challenge to the music writer. First and foremost, since the band rose through the ranks of Chicago’s illegal and underground venues, the simple fact is that experiencing the band’s recordings separates the listener from the band’s ‘natural’ environment. Secondly, like most independent, outsider pop bands in recent years, THE FUNS’ music is really without genre. You could call them a punk band, but that’s not quite right – their songs are often chugging, slow, and tempo-shifting. Yet, the band isn’t really noisy or crazy, either — they don’t mash effects pedals, they don’t play with signal noise, they don’t manipulate tape, etc. And, as muddy the band might sound, this certainly isn’t what you’d recognize as grunge. So you see, we have a full gamut of ill-fitting categories for THE FUNS.” -Nicholas Zettel, Decoder Magazine: http://www.secretdecoder.net/reviews/2013/06/04/the-funs-the-funs/

EVAN PATTERSON, ACOUSTIC GUITAR will be just like it sounds: the debut of a surprise, completely solo set by Evan Patterson, guitarist/vocalist for Young Widows, Old Baby, and Jaye Jayle. So gather ’round the imaginary campfire, and get ready for some songs, Louisville!

Apart from fans of Windhand, the Virginia-based doom-metal band she anchors as singer and lyricist, DORTHIA COTTRELL is an unknown pleasure. Criminally so, but her new debut solo album will change that. It is a work of savage beauty, a collection of folk-blues songs as lustrous as they are foreboding. Shadows lurk in COTTRELL’s voice, a smoky, sage alto that most certainly belongs to a woman who has “whiskey in my water,” as she sings on “Oak Grove.” In that song, she confesses — or maybe it’s a boast — “I’m the kind of girl who needs a devil in a man / To satisfy me.” With little more than acoustic guitar and multi-tracked harmonies, and pedal steel conjuring some haze, the album has the unhurried intimacy of old Folkways recordings, or even Cat Power’s The Covers Record. She strips her cover of Townes Van Zandt’s “Rake” down to a skeletal dirge, giving a similar treatment to her forlorn version of Gram Parsons’s “A Song for You.” An artist of COTTRELL’s caliber was bound to step into the light, even as darkness surrounds her. (James Reed, Boston Globe)

THE MIGHTY AUROCH sound like trying to fit a truck in your ear. Formed sometime in 2007 (we think, we drink a lot of beer) THE MIGHTY AUROCH has been blowing minds and eardrums since. With their own brand of stoner rock and doom metal, many of the bars in Louisville, Kentucky have had to increase their building’s structural insurance. THE MIGHTY AUROCH named themselves after a now extinct species of buffalo indigenous to Europe. Slow, lumbering, mighty, don’t mess with ’em.

NATE HALL is best known for his space-rock/doom outfit, U.S. Christmas (Neurot Recordings). His first solo album on Neurot, A Great River, explores more textural, slow roots reminiscent of Townes Van Zandt. Nate’s second album, Electric Vacuum Roar was released last year with additional guitars by Brett Netson (Caustic Resin, Earth, Built To Spill), and goes in a completely different direction, with just two long tracks of drone/amplifier worship in the vein of Earth or Sunn0)).

Brutal Benevolence (Philanthropy At Full Volume)
Founded on June 11th, 2012 by Patrick Flanary, Amanda Flanary, Kim Bailey, and Julie Lunn in honor of Patrick’s daughter, Fiana. We’re raising the awareness of Williams Syndrome and fundraising to support children with Williams Syndrome through the power of music.

Brutal Benevolence, Inc. is a group of musicians and artists coming together to support music therapy as an integral part of the development of children with disabilities. Our intent is to enrich the lives of high needs children in the greater Louisville area by sponsoring group music therapy programs.

Williams Syndrome is a genetic condition that is present at birth and can affect anyone. It is characterized by multiple medical problems, including cardiovascular disease, developmental delays, and learning disabilities. These occur side by side with striking verbal abilities, highly social personalities and an affinity for music. WS affects 1 in 10,000 people worldwide – an estimated 20,000 to 30,000 people in the United States. It is known to occur equally in both males and females and in every culture.

NOX-AB

Riddle me this: who on Earth makes 15 top notch records in 5 years and stays as obscure as OBNOX monarch Bim Thomas? Not that there’s been no love at all—now that the man seemingly spent as much of 2014 on tour as off, and dropped blazetastic videos for “Red I” and “Molecule/How to Rob,” the spotlight is widening, and not just from the usual indie/undie blogs — the Washington-by-god-POST has seen fit to recognize the ‘Nox’s bulletproof alloy of Cleveland-by-god-Ohio’s two sturdiest musical ores: punk rock and soul. And maybe that right there’s why fame, Grammys and fat cash haven’t come a-knockin’ — ’Noxmusik is some potent, real, RAW shit, and the new drop, Boogalou Reed, isn’t going to win over any Future Islands fans to the cause. And that is what it is, but Thomas’ songwriting chops keep getting better and better. Boogalou Reed is home to soul satisfying gospel-psych like “I Climbed a Mountain,” skillet-to-the-face noise freakouts like “Proto-Pipe,” taut rockers like “Raven Slaughter Culture” and “All Hail the Deejay.” ‘Nox’s tunes just keep turning out SO DAMN GOOD, and if more people can’t hear that through the fuzzgrind, that’s really just too bad for them. But there’s no way rock ‘n’ roll this persuasive stays a secret forever. – Ron Kretsch

TROPICAL TRASH have caused quite a stir with their two 7″ records, Fear of Suffering, and Think Back Kick a Beer, both on Sophomore Lounge. Still Single describes TROPICAL TRASH as an “Excellent combination of thrashing energy and solid ideas that break apart and recombine in novel, tuneful ways.” Their debut full length record, UFO Rot, will be released by the venerable Load Records label on May 26th.

SICK VELVET are one hell of a fuzzed-out glam rock band from right here, Louisville, Kentucky!

From the barren streets of middle-America come SHAVED WOMEN. Reigning as the supreme harbingers of chaos in Saint Louis, Missouri, this nihilistic quartet has risen to the top through an effective mix of brutal noise rock and self-destructive hardcore punk. Informed by the caustic nature of small city-towns, the band focuses its feedback-drenched dirge into a cross-section of existential anxiety and landlocked depression. With the ability to simultaneously smolder and combust, SHAVED WOMEN seamlessly blend the warring guitar riffs of Black Flag, the rabid mania of The Jesus Lizard, and Drunks With Guns’ reckless abandon. Singer Ben Salyers’ animalistic vocal approach barrels in the red with self-loathing rage over guitarist Chris Eck’s grinding walls of feedback. Referencing the buzz-saw warp of Black Flag’s Greg Ginn, Eck weaves through a maze of discordant riffs while maintaining total control of the band’s uncompromising progression. Anchored by the dialed-in rhythm section of bassist John Birkner and drummer Tom Valli, the band easily transitions from erratic breakneck speeds to a headstomping trench crawl with metronomic vitality. The band’s unmatched tenacity results in a bevy of AmRep-style breakdowns hinged on unforgettable mid-tempo hooks and complete brainwave annihilation. This will be their second-to-last ever show!

TRAUMA HARNESS hails from the surrounding area of Saint Louis, Missouri and fling back and forth on a bipolar emotional spectrum of dark hopelessness dirges to uplifting noisy pop.

SCUZZ MASTER are a relatively new Louisville band, full of rock n’ roll abandon. You might have seen them open for White Reaper and Anwar Sadat at Zanzabar recently, but if you missed it, here’s your next chance to see them destroy!

ATIVIN formed in Bloomington, Indiana in the winter of 1994 after Chris Carothers (guitar) and Rory Leitch (drums) met at Indiana University. Guitarist Dan Burton joined the group the following spring, cementing the band’s loud, instrumental rock sound. Steve Albini and Carl Saff recorded the band’s debut EP, Pills vs. Planes, which was released in December 1996. The spring of 1997 saw the release of the “Modern Gang Reader”/”Larkin” single, the first of several releases for Secretly Canadian Records. The band worked with Andy Bryant at King Size on German Water, its debut album for Secretly Canadian, releasing it in March 1998. A return to Albini’s Chicago studio, Electrical Audio, yielded the four-song EP Summing the Approach, which was released in the fall of 1998. Taking a break while Carothers moved out west and Burton worked in the band Early Day Miners, ATIVIN reconvened in 2001 with drummer Kevin Duneman, to record Interiors, which added sparse, minimalist vocals to their sound; it was released in early 2002 to critical acclaim. Continuing on in the same vein, ATIVIN recorded their last release Night Mute in both Bloomington and Portland, using drummers Mark Rice (John Wilkes Booze) and Joey Ficken (The Swords Project) in early 2004. After a lengthy hiatus, ATIVIN are now playing select shows when and if they feel it’s right.

ANWAR SADAT “sound totally Boston circa 1982: aggressively shouted vocals, aggressive rhythms, jaggedly distorted guitars and just enough melody above the noise to make them catchy as hell.” – New York Music Daily. ANWAR SADAT has released two albums and an EP, and is currently working on their third album.

karass

Louisville, Kentucky’s KARASS uses live loops, chimey guitars, interstellar electronics, driving bass, pulsing synths, thunderous drums, and weepy cello to create sprawling soundscapes that drive forward towards an epic climax in a quirky, odd-metered fashion.
